Well I think the NIL makes it so called legal to pay players that the Blue Bloods have always done by surrogates under the table. Whether they provided vehicles, cash, or jobs for family. Coaches that have cheated or turned a blind eye to shady boosters seem to always find a job if they win. ie Bruce Pearl

That's pretty mind blowing to me. You don't get to stage of discussions of years and amounts without first expressing interest. So if years and amounts were discussed, at minimum, the coach (through his agent) acknowledged interest in the job and the agent said something to the effect of "ok, we're interested, what type of compensation are you talking about?" and then the schools responded with numbers. I still can't imagine a university offering without first interviewing the coach personally and they wouldn't throw out years and amounts without the agent saying they were interested.

Schertz spent 13 years at a Division II school and if more money and recognition was his priority, he would have left there a long time ago. Everyone is wired differently and while money certainly is an important factor in life, it's not the driving decision making force for many people. Before Gonzaga had the money to pay Mark Few more money and even still, he's making $1.8 million per year which is much less than he could get at a different university. But he loves Spokane and has absolutely zero job insecurity and a fanbase that loves him.

Perhaps these "offers" are simply leverage that the agent is attempting to create to get Schertz a bigger/longer contract at Indiana State. Regarding the Indiana State collective and their president's quote, I think the quote itself was a little strange but I can imagine if Al Bowman were still President that he would be actively involved with fundraising and bringing in money to make the athletic programs more competitive. Successful athletic programs are a source of attraction and attention that directly correlate to student applications and enrollment. It's money well invested.

Side note: I watched Indiana State's last home NIT game the other night and was blown away by the sellout crowd. I remember going to that arena and also seeing attendance numbers that were much worse than what Illinois State has been in recent years. It's almost incomprehensible to me how they could turn the Terre Haute community and Indiana State fanbase around like that to generate sellouts today. Lately, I've lost hope that Illinois State could ever turn things around because the community and fanbase feel apathetic but watching Indiana State gives me some hope.

Winning. Cures. All.

Not sure if this is the thread for this or not but Indiana State is playing Utah right now on ESPN at Madison Square Garden in the semifinals of the NIT. Indiana State is currently winning 21-13 with 11:37 left in the first half. Robbie Avila has 11 points and is 3-4 from 3.

Yes, I was completely wrong on that. I had no idea they changed the location. It's a perfect venue for the final four. Loved the interview with Bobby Plump (real life Jimmy Chitwood from Hoosiers)

This is my first time watching Indiana State this year. Wow, they're so well coached. Love the way they play. Their turnaround has been remarkable. Watching this on TV, it feels like a home game for Indiana State with the crowd. Very impressed

The ball movement and 3 point shooting by Indiana State is definitely in stark contrast to Illinois State.

I am so jealous of Indiana St this year. Such a great team to watch, having great success, and getting national attention. I never thought I would be envious of the that program.

We should make Pedon and staff watch this game over and over and over. Love the offense and ball movement.

She (the ball) gives you a lottery ticket when you can effectively move the ball without dribbling. Which then makes the dribble more effective. Ohhhhh she wants to teach this generation WISDOM!

Not gonna last. Going to lose their coach and most of their players as soon the season is over.

No doubt, but they could be like Drake and reload with another coach that will most likely keep the success going. I expect Drake to be near the top of the conference next year, even with a first year (MVC) coach. Having top coaches that make runs in the Valley be plucked by bigger programs with more money to pay has been a reality long before the NIL era. It's a delicate process where an athletic department/university has to make the right next hire.

Years ago, Southern Illinois went on a great stretch of this with Bruce Weber followed by Matt Painter, followed by Chris Lowrey (that hire looked goo at first before it imploded).

The more I contemplate the best approach in building a program at our level, the more I lean toward wanting coaches like John Shertz or Ben McCollum instead of hiring a top assistant from a power 4 conference. The reason is that these types of coaches have proven track records of success as head coaches AND their success hasn't relied on top NIL level talent but instead based on players that fit into a system. I'm incredibly impressed with what John Shertz has done and there are many players on that roster that were not considered D1 talent and certainly not at a level where they had to out recruit bigger programs to get them.

I can't stand Indiana State. Going back to the Larry Bird days. I can't stand their town. I don't like their fans. I don't like Schertz's looks. I don't like their players. I don't like their baby blue unis. I've tried to root for them on this run, and I can't do it. I'm rooting for Seton Hall. Thanks for listening.
