Being in a better conference is great if you are at the top of the conference year in and year out. It is not so great if you are not one of the top dogs. DePaul is in the Big East and Loyola is in the MVC - both are large Catholic schools in Chicago. Who would you have had more fun following this year? They day might come when DePaul reigns in the Big East, but then it will be Butler or someone else who is the bottom feeder. The MVC is a fine conference as it is - it is a much better than the OVC despite what some people on this board might say. ISU has a chance to be competitive in it year in and year out, and being in a better conference will not necessarily increase fan interest or bring in better recruits, IMO.
As for Gonzaga, they may resent sharing their tournament money, but they don't mind going to the tournament every year. If they join a reconfigured Mountain West, they may continue to go to the tournament each year and may be able to keep more of their tournament money, but there is no guarantee or either. There are worse fates than being a big fish in a small pond.
