Being in a better conference is great if you are at the top of the conference year in and year out. It is not so great if you are not one of the top dogs. DePaul is in the Big East and Loyola is in the MVC - both are large Catholic schools in Chicago. Who would you have had more fun following this year? They day might come when DePaul reigns in the Big East, but then it will be Butler or someone else who is the bottom feeder. The MVC is a fine conference as it is - it is a much better than the OVC despite what some people on this board might say. ISU has a chance to be competitive in it year in and year out, and being in a better conference will not necessarily increase fan interest or bring in better recruits, IMO.

As for Gonzaga, they may resent sharing their tournament money, but they don't mind going to the tournament every year. If they join a reconfigured Mountain West, they may continue to go to the tournament each year and may be able to keep more of their tournament money, but there is no guarantee or either. There are worse fates than being a big fish in a small pond.

And yet, we have another example of a school moving up in conferences where football was meaningless.

Gonzaga is staying put in the WCC.

Very interesting how Gonzaga used MWC as leverage to change the WCC. Reducing conf season from 18 to 16 games. Guaranteeing top 2 reg season seeds go right to semifinals.

Instead of leaving WCC for a better league, Gonzaga dramatically improved its own odds to dominate a weaker conference and get auto-bids and cleared more space to play more non-con games enabling it to improve its resume to get higher seeds.

Now that is creativity!

It’s always so cool to see the best non-P7 conference schools thinking outside the box. Wonder if that will ever happen in the Valley?

Good to see a top tier mid-major school have enough faith in their own brand that they don't feel the need to latch on to another conference for money. Respect to Gonzaga. I bet there are some folks in Kansas that wish they had done the same thing when they bomb out of the AAC next season.

Good to see an upper level mid-major school have enough faith in their own brand that they don't feel the need to latch on to another conference for money. Respect to Gonzaga. I bet there are some folks in Kansas that feel the same way when they finish below .500 in the AAC next season.
