I will counter Lieb with this former bird. Jeff Wilkins (basketball) - Wikipedia
Thank you, that whole post can use some countering, who's got time to go back in the history books. Mr Scipio either hasn't been following the Birds for very long or has a short memory.

We have an old team. If we have to DEPEND on any of our freshmen for heavy minutes this year then we are in trouble.

So word is Chase asked for the redshirt and I appreciate Pedon trying to respect his wishes....but.....

man, with the portal I just don't like redshirting guys for non-medical reasons. You put that year into him, give him a scholly and then he can suddenly be at Drake or something and you get nothing in return. I hope Chase reconsiders this year and he can be a contributor.
I agree. Have we ever red-shirted a player as a freshman where it turned into a good 5th year? I mean in recent years anyway. It usually seems like a good plan at the time, but a very small percentage of the time it works out.

Matt Hein....Sissoko....

Anyway, I think one thing that wasn't talked about much is Lourdes defense. They played a really active 1-3-1 and 2-3 to clog the paint, knowing we outsized them. That said, we ran very few, if any, sets in last night. It was mostly a zone-motion with a big in the middle and someone trying to run short corner, which is why we got so many good looks in the corners.

I don't love the RS for Walker, but I do think he would benefit from it. I mainly am not a fan because that solidifies Foster/Lewis spending time at the 5. Which can work having both on the court at the same time but what happens when foul trouble hits? Then you've got Pence guarding Brodie at Drake or Hutson at UNI. Obviously, Pedon would go to Schmitt if that happened but you get the point.

Dinma Odiakosa took a redshirt year. I think he might have done it after his freshman year though if memory serves. Either way he took a redshirt and still played 4 total years for us.

You don't think respecting his wishes will help in retaining him? What is the alternative? He forces him to play this year and he leaves because he doesn't think the coach will respect his wishes. We may not get 5 years out of him, but wouldn't we take a solid 2 or 3? I also think you are underestimating the role that Pedon plays. He seems to have a strong bond with players (at least that is his plan). He was probably one of the first coaches to even consider this young man when he was 350 lbs. He probably was a factor in helping him get his weight down to 300 lbs. Give Pedon a chance to develop his "culture" and maybe just maybe his players will stay committed. If not, we probably wouldn't want them around anymore. Muller was able to get us some of the most talented athletes we have ever had at ISU, but he lacked "culture" and the players never seemed committed to anything other than themselves.

If he redshirt or not will ultimately depend on the success of the team with or without him this year. Most kids want to win. If the redshirt route is taken and Chase make his gains and see the need for his skills he will be back. Is there a slight chance he sat out and leave? Sure it is. Pedon have said time and time again he wants kids who want to be in the program. Now us as fans need to have patience and see how it play out. Personally I believe the kid believe in Pedon and it seem like he don’t mind putting in the work when healthy.

I’ve been a fan and STH for a while. But I admittedly don’t have the history of many legacy fans on this blog. Just offering my opinion; not trying to step on anyone’s toes or create any controversy.

Is it a concern that a kid asks to be redshirted when they’re healthy?
Seems odd, but what do I know…

It sounds like if they do decide to redshirt Chase, it will be done with his best interest in mind. I understand the current landscape of college basketball with the transfer portal, but I don't see it as something to cause concern. Would we rather Chase play a full season of 10 minutes or so per game as a freshman with risk of injury, or would we rather redshirt him this year and prep him for a full season of college basketball (much much different than his high school experience). I'd rather have a redshirt senior 1st team all conference Chase Walker than a true freshman Chase Walker. The trade off is we sacrifice his least productive season so we can experience his most productive season while giving him one extra offseason where he could decide to jump ship. Regardless of the decision, I trust the coaching staff on this one.

Chase Walker "redshirt" - all I know is what I read in the paper and read on this board, but everyone/most/many seem to have read into this the final decision has been made. We're one game into the schedule, Coach says he's "open", Chase says he's "open", but it isn't a done deal until March, when the season's over. He can play at any time up until then, if and when the relevant parties - which doesn't include this board ;) - decide he's gonna hit the floor. So, you know, don't get all "done deal" about it just yet. Relax, enjoy the season, don't try to figure out the portal implications, etc. until later.

Thanks. I didn't know if it still was this year. We left the game early and only saw 4 vehicles in the entire lot and I think those were people working at the football stadium.
Yeah. No idea about this year, but it has been for decades, so I’m ass u me ing it still is 🤷‍♂️

I have seen all of the ISU 7 footers play that were shown on a recent list.
IMO, Lieb is most comparable to Joe Galvin. Both are a bit tentative on offense and block a few shots. He is not the force Jeff Wilkins became by his senior season. That may change for Lieb as time goes on. I hope it does.

For injuries on guys his size take longer to heal. It is no wonder he was laboring. I got one like that the kid cares about the team and what's best for them. If they can hold down the fort without him great. Gives him a chance to compete the body transformation. Now I am in no way comparing them talent wise but body wise but here goes. Zion
Williamson is a big man and has foot problems. So let's let Chase get healed up and get in shape and get him ready for next season.

My first thought was maybe it is concerning, but the more I think about it, I think it shows maturity and fore thought. He probably isn't 100% healthy, and knows that he is going to be, behind the other bigs for the most part this year and would rather save his eligibility for when he can contribute more. I like that Chase asked for it. I might sing a different tune if all our bigs get hurt, but I like where his head is at on this one.

If they are going to play him, I hope it is sooner rather than later. I'd hate for him to sit out all year, and then blow his frosh year of eligibility at in late February/March.

Agreed. Unless we have a rash of injuries that force him to play, either commit to not playing him or play him. Don't keep it open until February and then decide to use it for 10 games.
