How the game should be played.

Watching Iowa vs UNC right now makes me realize how it’s possible to play great fundamental basketball without a bunch of 4-5 start recruits.
It also makes me realize just how far away ISU is from even being in the same universe as a well coached team like Iowa. Just sad.

Wasn’t referring to UNC. Most Iowa players were 3 stars at best.

Didn’t the Taphorn, Harris, Holifield team beat Iowa years ago? I think Taphorn had 30 that game. I can’t remember if we won but we played them tough.

Agree with this, I mean the bigger point. I'm not a big McCaffrey fan, but Iowa teams generally bring out a bunch of ordinary guys, lots of Iowegians, who don't do much but shoot the lights out, make free throws, box out, take care of the ball, and play D. Other than that, nothin' special. :) They'll be in most games, especially at home. I think Luka Garza is pretty "unskilled", kind of a big clod, but he's strong, strong with the ball, plays within himself most of the time, works with his teammates, etc. And ends up an All-American and player of the year candidate.

Couldn't agree more. Dan should coach and recruit as he played. I like Dan but I don't understand how he doesn't get this.
Donewald would say shooting comes and goes. Defense and rebounding are consistent.

Iowa gets its fair share of 4 star recruits - two each in 2017 and 2019 and one in 2018. This is not an apples to apples comparison.

And let's not forget the last time ISU got two 3 stars was the McIntosh, Wills and Lee (2 star) class. That worked out pretty well, even with the disappointing finish. Criticism of Dan is warranted, but I don't agree with this line of argument.

I believe Hawkins was 3-star also

Yep beat Iowa with BJ Armstrong by 1 with a rally from a big deficit in a holiday tournament. Next night lost to Oklahoma by 51.

Iowa also competes in the Big Ten, where many schools get 4-5 star recruits. So, in a way, it is more impressive considering they compete yearly for the crown in a top 2 league.
