The timing does seem very odd however if the Athletic Department was clear he wasn't going to be the coach after this season and they felt they the basketball program was stagnant, making this change now breathes a little fresh air into the program while also giving Danny Manning an opportunity to interview on the job. It's not likely he would be hired as head coach as he wasn't successful at Wake Forrest however he has head coaching experience and I'm sure the athletic department felt at the very minimum that making this change would be a net positive.
