The lack of an indoor facility is starting to have real consequences in recruiting. I know of a HS kid getting recruited by the Redbirds - in fact his family has season tickets. However, they have visited several MAC schools and now other MFVC schools. They noted this weekend that University of South Dakota is making a $30 Million investment into football facilities. That has left a BIG impression.

And contrary to any "whispers" you may have heard through the Vidette they're not building one this summer. This is a hot button issue that has already hurt us and will continue to for the foreseeable future.

Definitely not this summer. No way athletics would take on two major upgrades in one off-season. They are already upgrading the seats at RBA.

Glad to hear they already started! I thought they'd have to wait until after graduation. I hope when they are finished that the place really looks improved. I have seen the diagram for the new seating, but was hoping they would publish some kind of 'visualization' of how it will look when done. Somebody told me that top three rows will now be turned into box seats? I guess that's good, especially if it's all glassed in (to give it a modern look).

They haven't started the new seats yet. The Vidette mentioned they would start building an indoor facility this summer, but I was just saying that athletics wouldn't take on two major construction pieces at the same time. The seats are scheduled to be done in time for Volleyball season 2019.

Here is the info on their upgrades. Looks really nice. I kind of laughed when I read one of their priorities was building an "outdoor" practice facility.

$26,300,000. South Dakota. 1 side of their dome and a practice field. Geez we're up against it.

Wow! Really a nice looking facility they are moving towards in South Dakota. It is a great recruiting tool for them. We got all excited last year when they finally put in a new turf field at Hancock last season! Besides the new turf there were those black lines around the numbers on the players jerseys too! Baby steps...

so can someone share a link or copy/paste verbiage about "rumor" they might break ground on indoor this summer. Curious to know context/source of this "as yet" unsubstantiated rumor. I mean, we're supposedly at 139m of our 150m Redbird Rising fund raising project.

They are a long way off from the indoor facility. None of the Redbird Rising money is going to be used for the indoor facility.

The whispers thing was in the ridiculous Vidette article posted on the basketball forum. It's not to be taken seriously. I think the kid just made it up.

I wonder if we've reached out to the many construction management alums to see if we can get a "discount" on the plans/renderings or actual work?

i know a couple that would help the alma mater.

"Lyons said an architect is working on cost estimates for the facility."

So now it is not yet in the plans for the 150m Redbird Rising campaign ???

This is not what I recall AD Lyons saying .. I believe around Sep 2017. I thought I found youtube video but it was pulled off youtube. But I distinctly recall AD Lyons on promotional video indicating an indoor facility was one of the key initiatives already earmarked for the 150m Redbird Rising capaign. I vividly recall thinking, ok, this indoor thing can happen sooner than later

Des anyone else recall this promotional video where AD Lyons said it was already one of the approved initiatives. And now we sit alomst 2 years later, and we've taken step backwards ???

Anyone recall this ??

Someone posted earlier this year that Redbird Rising money would not be used. Here is an article from late 2017.

https://www.pantagraph.com/sports/college/illinois-state/isu-football-to-have--game-schedule-in/article_7176a7b6-098e-5eb7-a2d6-7a19a0468ca8.html

Redbirds Rising: As part of a university wide fundraising campaign dubbed “Redbirds Rising,” Lyons recently commented the athletic department has surpassed $25 million in gifts and pledges with a goal of $34 million.

“The campaign has been going for three and a half years in silent phase. A typical campaign runs about seven years,” Lyons said. “We’re hoping to exceed $34 million.”

Lyons emphasized the $25 million raised thus far covers all sports and does not mean construction of the department’s long-sought indoor practice facility is imminent.

“We’re still trying to find that anchor gift for the indoor facility,” he said. “We’ve made some progress. We’re doing a good job of putting the need out.

"Now it’s a matter of sitting down with the right individuals whether it be corporate or individuals to see if they have interest at the level that would help us get this thing built.”

Lyons characterized the project as “not that far along. We have engaged architects to do some very preliminary planning.”

Lyons has previously indicated that a practice facility would be available for use by all Redbird teams and would be large enough to house a regulation size football field.

A few weeks ago I talked to Larry Dietz. I was all excited about the Redbird rising campaign in that it was 80 percent complete. I thought the practice facility was part of that, but it isn't. He said they only raised a couple million so far and that the original plans were already scrapped (you know, that nicely rendered building with the redbird logo which was actually a jacked up photo of Youngstown State's facility). He then said that 'Domes' are actually far cheaper to build, and so they're looking at that possibility. I'm not sure what he meant by a dome, but I'm thinking more like what our Tennis team plays in ( a gigantic bubble). So yeah, I was bummed to hear that. Anybody else hear anything?
