Some very interesting insights and quotes from the most recent FBS meetings on the CFB. Read the bold below - after 2025, is this where the A5 basically breaks off for CFB and not need the G5 teams to be part of their playground and decision-making process? Where would this leave ND? Does the A5 force ND's hand and force them join a conference? The next few years are going to get more interesting on this front.
- Current format is a 12-year agreement and ends after 2025
- The CFP management committee is comprised of 10 conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director
- 11 total, and needs consensus before proposing back to the schools for final approval
- Seems a current "stuck" item is for this current contract amendment to get to 12 for next year, does the current Automatic 5 champions get automatic berth and the highest rated Group of 5 team into the 12-team format.
- PAC12 and B10 on record as yes
- SEC, B12, Group of 5, and ND are a no, in part because of the way the current contract is structured, which ends after 2025
- Legal reasons are cited, no one wants to go before Congress, ect
- The real juicy part is right here:
- "Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff said.....the next iteration of the playoff would not need approval from the so-called Group of Five conferences."
- "I don't think we need 11 people to say yes to get to a solution that would be good for college football...I think you start by saying, 'What is the group that needs to agree on a model?' We can then hopefully invite the rest to join us in...."
Big 12's Bowlsby: College Football Playoff Expansion for 2024 ‘in Some Jeopardy'
Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says expanding the College Football Playoff as soon as the 2024 season is “in some jeopardy” if an agreement on a new format cannot be reached soon.
