Lewis, Kasubke, Banks and Poindexter in yesterday’s game:

97 minutes total
6 points (all from the line)
0-18 from the field
0-13 from 3
1 assist

Minus Lewis, this could be part of your core on next years team unless there are major roster shakeups.
Gentlemen, you're welcome for the free education. They should be grateful for the degree, experience and whatever NIL they got. They have a huge head start in life as compared to most. Next!

This. We're going nowhere this year. Play the freshman. Chase obviously brings offensive skills to the table, defense a work in progress, no need to sit him for long stretches other than foul trouble. We know Johnny has game, Let's see if Pence has some. Not going to find out by sitting him. I have come around to - this year is all about next year.
In the past I would have agreed with this sentiment but in the NIL/Portal world I am not so certain about this strategy. Clearly if ISU throws in the towel and goes heavy on frosh playing time (esp Pence) the team is not only likely to lose but lose big. The rub is how do you keep those frosh next year after they spend many games getting pounded while playing for ISU? Further every other player is likely gone (may not be such a bad thing) as they too are likely dissatisfied with ISU HOOPS and will want something better. Losing often and big is hard combo to battle at all levels of experience.

I disagree with scrapping this year and just playing The Freshman as much as we can. Almost all this team is eligible to come back next year, keep working on the whole roster what we can build by march. There's still a lot of room for growth.

The question is “how do you keep winning ball players.” Not a knock on any player and most that can play at this level have been winners in the past, but can they win at this level. I would worry about winning first and then worry about keeping them here. Other programs have switched coaches and within two years they have at least turned the program around. Looks to me ISU is in about the same place as the last couple years. I would think with NIL and the portal it would be easier now to turn it around then years ago when you could only bring in freshman and juncos.

This is on management now. If the plan is not working one either changes the plan or gets someone else who has a different plan. It has been way too long at ISU to “let’s give it another five years.”

Agree 100 percent. Practically I believe NIL hurts ISU not helps ISU. Portal impact depends on the coach/ program. Need a coach good at evaluating talent and knowing what pieces are needed for the immediate season. Not easy but possible. Different recruiting and overall coaching strategy from the past. More living in the moment vs developing for the future esp for midmajor and downward.

ISU culture hurts too, IMO. Aka little desire for meaningful athletic success.

Come on Pedon! LETS GO!!

This senior core will NOT win the Valley. Ever! They could all come back for the next five years and it wouldn't matter. We haven't even played 2 of the top teams yet. Why can't folks see that Pedon completely whiffed in the portal? Foster is it. Do you think Banks, Poindexter, LK, Davis, etc. are going to put in the time to become efficient ( I'm talking Indiana State efficient) offensively to get to the top? Imagine how many shots these guys would need to put up over the summer to get up to 40% from 3. Indy has 5 guys shooting 40%+!

Call me crazy (which I’m bracing for), but I don’t agree with giving up on Banks and Poindexter. I saw enough of Poindexter last year to feel confident that he’s a pretty good shooter. Not yet sure about Banks, though. I think Poindexter lost a lot of his confidence when he was taken off the starting point guard slot. I’d like to see him go back to starting, with Davis at the 2. I’d bring Banks and Kinzinger off the bench. Poindexter is physically stronger than the rest and I think he could step up and regain his confidence if he started, and regain his shot making, which is badly needed on this team. Also, like Burford, I don’t think Poindexter shoots well without a lot of defensive pressure on him. Both seem to struggle when left wide open, both shoot better with defenders in their face. So if we put the ball back in his hands, I think there’s a good chance that they’ll start falling for him. And he’d compliment Davis, who doesn’t need the ball a lot to be effective. I know this is a lot of “arm chair” coaching, but like the rest of us, I’ve been struggling with solutions to our 3 point drought. Just my opinion here. I’m finding it hard to believe that Poindexter is a poor shooter. I’m more inclined to believe it’s a lack of confidence issue, which can be fixed if he’s given another chance. But, I’m not optimistic that my idea on Poindexter and Davis as starters will ever see the light of day.

Valid point. I admittedly watched only 10 minutes of the first half. Planned to watch the replay if we won. Too nice out, here in Texarkana, to be inside in the afternoon, and a honey do list like a CVS reciept. To pain adverse to watch more futility from distance knowing what else I could do with that 2 hours. Girls team is rocking now, with a Birds Fly Upside Down Over Iowa sweep. Need to watch more of them.
Texas or Arkansas side?

I am pretty sure Poindexter’s father said his son was out of position last year at the point and we would be much better with a true point guard and him playing off the ball.

And not sure how having defenders in his face is going to help him make more shots.

There are players, when left wide open, don’t shoot so well. Put a defender on them, they get an adrenaline push, step into their shot with more conviction, and shoot better. Take Burford for example. When I see him left wide open to shoot, I have some doubts that he’ll make it. Put a defender or two on him, the outcome is usually better. I recall Poindexter from last year being that type of shooter. Further, I think if he were to play the point, his confidence would rise and so would his offensive output. He’s a pretty solid decision maker and doesn’t turn the ball over much. And he’s strong with the ball in his hand. We need scorers right now and he’s shown he’s capable. Just my opinion that he can help ease our shooting woes. Finally, I’m glad Davis is getting more minutes. He’s a talented player. Kinziger, too.

There are a lot of bad basketball posts on here, but hoping we take MORE contested shots and less open shots in a year we are shooting 26% from the three point line could be the worst.

I think if Pedon can find guys that can make an immediate impact from the portal, then we should replace.

Do we want a better team or a team that is loyal to retaining middling talent?
The portal is part of the problem. Everyone on this team is from the portal other then the 3 freshman and Sissoko. Only guys he's hit on the portal is Burford and Foster. Right now Pedon and staff is 2/8 in the portal so good for a batting average of .250 in the portal. If we are going to recruit the portal you have to win the portal, you just can't recruit the portal bc we aren't having success in it.
I would argue that Evansville and Valpo who are starting 2 and 3 freshman are ahead of where we are bc they didn't recruit the portal and went with freshman, D2 and juco kids. Even Indiana State went went with D2 kids to follow Schertz to Indiana State and look where they are. If you recruit the portal you need to win it and so far this coaching staff isn't winning in the portal and it shows.

I wasn’t addressing the 3 point shot problem in particular. I was addressing getting more buckets and production from a player who has demonstrated the ability to do it in the past.
