ISU is projecting solid enrollment this fall, with tuition deposits running a bit ahead of last year's pace.

Meanwhile, UNI is looking at more than a 5% drop in their enrollment from just last year. They expect to have their lowest enrollment in a generation. Iowa State is also down.

Will be interesting to see how the directionals do this year after they have all claimed they are changing their approach to attracting students.. As far as sports goes, this has to be hurting NIU financially to try to compete in FBS with an enrollment of 13K undergrad and no fanbase..

Article paints a bleak outlook for a lot of public regional universities. Unfortunately ISU is straddling the fence and far from immune to those upcoming challenges.

The state of Illinois definitely needs to be proactive and strongly consider closing one school (maybe both?) out of EIU/WIU as well as consolidating or closures in the Chciago market too. UIUC and UIC’s enrollment growth and overall size is part of the reason there is so much overcapacity in Illinois. Those two universities alone have grown in the past 30 years by more than the combined EIU/WIU enrollment Their growth is a good thing as those universities are thriving. So thoughtless that the state of Illinois just dolled out hundreds of millions for new buildings and capital improvements to various universities without having a comprehensive plan for Illinois higher education. The state and citizens would be better off with fewer universities that have more resources and are better managed than the current mess. ISU, based upon performance/size/location/image, should be a university that is targeted for moderate and steady long term growth so that overall operating efficiencies and higher performance standards can be achieved similar to what has been happening and is happening at UIUC and UIC

100% agree, makes no sense to send EIU and WIU more state money than ISU gets, the current goal should be to have UICU, UIC and ISU grow and make them the centerpiece of the states higher education and compete with the other Midwest major schools.. let NIU and SIU/SIUE be what they are and compliment the 3 schools I mentioned... and let EIU, WIU and Chicago St sink or swim...

It’s a hard truth, but easy to say when it’s not your university.
Don’t want to imagine what it would be like to be on the other side of the conversation.

Don't need to close them, but could plan to streamline them a bit. Focus on the undergrads and straightforward majors. Simplify student services. Lower costs. There is a market for the traditional college experience at a decent price.

Then give all of the schools the same amount per student, ISU is always getting the least and that makes no sense.. just because they are trying to prop up the directions doesn’t mean we should get less..

Chicago State and EIU need to be mothballed. Both are close enough to alternatives and are dropping enrollment at a high enough rate to justify it. If at some point they can be streamlined and reopened look at it.

In Wisconsin it looks like we're going to have 10 smaller JC's consolidate with their bigger brothers. Example UW-Waukesha consolidating with UW-Milwaukee.
