Helt was injured in the second half and he tried to make a go of it, but clearly was hurting. It looked to be an ankle. He did come back in after a while, but did not look to be at full strength and then once we put the game away there was no reason to risk anything further.

Which raises the question, what up with Tyler Brown? Injured? What did I miss?
Tyler Brown came in immediately when Helt was hurt. I can't tell you how long he played tho. Could barely make out numbers.

Thanks, I did not see that. So that's good, even more guys got some PT.

OVC Network=SUCKS :(

So bad. I watched the highlights on GoRedbird.com and the quality was 100 times better than OVC Network. I'm assuming they were the same cameras.

watched on OVC network ... experienced same issues that everyone else already said ... signal lost right during opening kick, eventually got video signal, but very grainy, and then game recap of just the score is pathetic .. don't need to be reminded of score the entire game. How about the down and distance .. thats kind of important .. especially if you can barely hear anything. I don't recall anyone mentioning the sound absolutely sucked. I had my computer at its loudest setting and could barely hear it. And yes, I had the source provider's volume also at max volume.

Let me pile on too. I was also keeping track of DIII St. John's at St. Olaf, which started at 1pm. So I'm watching the feed from St. Olaf which was very nice and clear with good sound, full screen on the monitor, etc. And then I switch over to watch the Birds, and get the pre-game stuff that was on the feed at first, and then eventually get what everyone else is talking about here. Unbelievable contrast, that a DIII "network" feed trumped a DI conference feed.

Funny how you get used to certain things, like down and distance, at least the quarter if not the actual time, etc., but it really doesn't seem like asking to much to be able to do that. We're pretty far along in technology these days.

Redbird HDTV/Productions brought their own cameras to film the game. I'm guessing the Birds were not as surprised as we were with the terrible quality.

I don't remember who mentioned it but someone on here recommended muting the EIU stream and playing the Learfield Broadcast. You were able to pause the audio from Learfield and time it up with the game so Dick and Ted were doing the play-by-play. I may have to do that moving forward with away games.

Gotcha, the angle from the Gillum TD was the same so I figured it was the same cameras. With that said, why can't ISU broadcast on ESPN 3 if they brought their own cameras???

Home team owns "tv" broadcast rights.

One of the best parts of the game coverage occurred during the pregame segment. There was a hot mic and two guys were bitching about the stairs to the broadcast booth. Funny.

Great article by Kindred in the Pantagraph on the Gillum catch and back story.

ISU had three cameras on the field. One in each end zone and one hand held camera on the field. One end zone camera was located on a perch atop the scoreboard. The second was on a scissor lift in the opposite end zone.

You know how they say there are no dumb questions? Well, keep that in mind in the near future please. How important is staring down receivers in the college game? Is it something that definitely gets exploited by defenses?

Are you being serious? Does a quarterback telegraphing where he's going to throw the ball matter in college football? But I asked the dumb question. Should think about taking your own advice...

I mean yeah, I'm fairly confident staring down receivers at any level can be exploited by a defense. HIGH SCHOOL linebackers and DBs are taught to check a QBs eyes when they drop into a zone D.

Maybe I'm going against the grain here but I'm just not as impressed with Kolbe as Spack seems to be. It could just be that we haven't really opened the playbook the last two games. But I feel like we are more likely to not convert a 3rd than we are, especially if it's long. He underthrew Gillum for his "best" throw, and he was nearly picked off twice yesterday. I just never feel like he's gonna "make something happen". We are clogged with great talent behind this guy...I can see that, just not seeing what he can consistently bring to the table other than experience.
I thought Kolbe played fine. My problem tends to be with play calling a lot. Imo Billy Dicken gets in love with passing and not running the ball. Our depth with 4 running backs should be running the ball not passing the ball 9 straight times on that heat. Let that big o-line establish themselves and our stable if running backs get in a groove and set up the play action.

This was me-- it worked great. Unfortunately, I could not get the OVC network to work on my chrome book or ipad, but was able to on my phone. Had the video on my phone, and goredbirds.com/learfield streaming on my computer. Was able to pause the radio broadcast to sync up- it was perfect, other than I was watching on a small phone instead of a larger screen-- may have ultimately been better for me though because the picture quality was pretty good on a smaller screen... Tried this on the Tune-In app as well, just to check, and you are able to pause that to sync up for future reference.

Impressive. That was the largest margin of victory ever for the Redbirds at Eastern and we've been playing this one for a long time. Hoist it.

My bad. The Redbirds won 32-0 at Eastern in 1942. I'm guessing that not too many of us were at that game.

I think Kolbe has played well so far especially when you consider his assignment. In the first two games he's had the better team and an early lead so his main focus was ball control (aka don't screw up). We had the better team last year against Eastern but turnovers hurt us and we lost. Nebraska is better than N. ILL but they dug a quick hole for themselves with not one but two pick 6's and couldn't quite recover. The better team doesn't always win.

No such mistakes for Kolbe. No int's, no fumbles. The EIU QB got blindsided and coughed it up. Kolbe got hit a couple of times but he held on. I think the added weight helps in that regard. He can adsorb hits better. Not all of his passes looked great but he was throwing balls his receiver would catch or nobody would. We can live with that. Jake was also taking a lot of snaps from backup Center Garrett Hirsch so just avoiding mistakes there was a victory.

We did have the blocked punt so I'm guessing the special teams have rec'd added scrutiny this week. That's really the only thing that kept us from putting this one away early.

We'll have other games where Kolbe will be challenged to throw heroic passes into tight little windows but for now a conservative QB with a 2-0 record and more than 40pts per game will do just fine.

I should also compliment Gillum for his TD reception. EIU gambled and tried to strip the ball rather than go for the tackle. Teams will do that when they're behind but Gillum kept his grip and then made them pay.

Now on to the Bears. If we play "don't screw up football" down there we have a great chance to win that one too.

i watched Spack's post game interview. he is not happy with kicking game right now .. he was pretty direct about needing to improve there.

Bu tmy overall sense (aka vibe) I get from Spack .. he seems much more confident this year than last year. Northwestern was bit of a anomoly early last year ... not a fluke, because we outplayed them. But certainly not indicative of our early season play. So last year, it always seemed like Spack felt they had "potential" but was much more guarded about whether they would realize their potential.

This year, he just looks confident.

p.s. that and 2 bucks will get you a decent cup of coffee
