Speaking of not having the seniors back and grabbing 4 from the portal, it’s not like the cream of the crop is coming to play here. Staff have been portal picking for two years now, it’s hard man.
Yep. Finding incoming success through the portal is never easy, added to which when these kids look at our program right now what do they see? A handful of success but no tourney appearances in 26 years, a beautiful but empty arena, unimpressive style of play...its not exactly a beacon of quality mid-major basketball, sadly. Same with incoming freshmen. When they visit and see about as many people milling about the arena before lunch as there are at tipoff on a weeknight, it's not that attractive. Recruiting for us right now has to be an all-time unenviable bitch. Whoever digs us out of this needs a statue outside the arena.

It also comes down to execution. Drake was hot last night...but they also rotate the ball, cut or pick and roll, and finish. We just dribble and stand around. Our strategy seems to shoot as many 3's as we can, and shooting the 3 seems to be our weakness.

Well, sure, but a new coach and staff is offering a clear chance at immediate PT, so I'm not sure it's quite so hard. Plus Pedon, to his credit IMHO, isn't just grabbing the first guy he sees but is trying to build "culture", blah blah blah (and I'm somewhat cynical about that, to be sure, but I like the way it sounds). Good Lord boys, he's just getting going, his highly regarded HS big has a sore foot and isn't suiting up, some of the P5 portals are okay but showing why they didn't get PT before (Kasubke, Davis, Lieb) and haven't developed or broken loose. It's a work in progress, last night stank, but geez, speaking only for myself, I see some hope.

Great point.
I feel this to be a fair question, but what exactly is the allure in coming to ISU from the portal?
My guess is it’s “a chance to play immediately”.
After that, I’m not sure….

I’ve heard Coach Pedon say many times ‘it’s a work in progress’. Well, last night we didn’t make any progress. I was excited about this season as I imagine many of you were. That excitement and hope clouded judgement. I’ve said before that we didn’t fall to where we are overnight; and we’re not going to get back to respectability overnight. It’s going to take time. A rough season is ahead of us, probably several more IMO. Better than last year? Yes, I think so. But still nowhere near good enough. But I’m not going to throw in the towel. Not this year anyway.

I agree with most of this.

How about one little bit of "sunshine"? Lieb took no threes, and hit a couple putbacks, 4 points? 6 boards altogether. Progress. Played almost 14 minutes. If we could get 20 minutes out of him in that vein, something like 7-8 ppg and 8-10 boards, that wouldn't be all that bad.

Malachi got positive, 5-7 from the floor, 50% from range. Better. Progress.

Pence hit a three. Progress.

Why'd Foster only play 15 minutes? I had the sound off quite a bit cause I hated the TV announcers, so I might have missed something.

So, some progress, a couple steps back here and there. Still a search for roles, rotation.

Well said. All valid points. Progress! That should be our hope this season.

2 sides to everything. If lieb is doing well it means the team is losing or he wouldn't be playing much.

Brodie outweighs Foster by 40 lbs.

Meanwhile, over at Indy State and Evansville, they have figured something out. Evansville may fade and we may even beat them, but at this time, they appear to have turned it around and done so quickly!

Several more? Pedon won't get "several".
