We were never led on. No signs he was ever close to committing. Disappointing would be spurned late or decommitting.
I wouldn't quote Dan. He got how many kids from Illinois? He didn't try...trust me when I say that."The best thing a recruit can tell you is yes, I'm coming. The second best thing they can tell you is no, I'm definitely not interested so you don't continue to waste time on them" - Dan Muller
Not the point at all. Lol. The point is, if a team is out of the running, a coach wants to know as soon as possible.I wouldn't quote Dan. He got how many kids from Illinois? He didn't try...trust me when I say that.
I get your point. You think a kid should just say yes after he has blown up and a team that hasn’t made the tournament in 25 years comes calling. They don’t see your potential a year ago- they only want the talent when it’s an almost sure thing. Got it!Not the point at all. Lol. That isn’t going to happen until we can climb at least over .500.
Thanks for clarifying my point, Doug. As I said in my initial post...the BEST answer a recruit can give you is "yes," the SECOND BEST is "no" so you can move on and don't have to use additional resources. I never indicated that Certa or anyone one else should hurry up and commit to ISU... just coaches prefer recruiting to be black and white, yes or no. It rarely is.The essence of the point is that of course, the best answer a recruit we would love to have can give us is a clear YES and commit to Illinois State. The second best answer they can give us is NO, so we can choose to move on. The MAYBES are often the worst answer, if in their heart they are a no because of the amount of time, energy and effort that goes into the recruiting process, calling, texting and traveling to see games. So those kids that have their heart on somewhere else, whether that be a "bigger" offer or conference, I welcome and embrace the NO so we can move on.
I do high level consulting for businesses and it's the same thing with B2B business development outreach. Companies often invest a lot of time and resources trying to get an account or new business relationship only to eventually get a no and the entire time they're chasing that account, they could have been focusing on other targets. A lot of kids (and potential clients for businesses) will allow themselves to be recruited, may love the attention they receive during the courting process when they are ultimately not going to commit.
It's a delicate balance to identify the target accounts (or recruits) to go after. I could (and have) speak for days on this topic and it's just as relevant for business as it is for recruiting athletes.
Maybe he wants to be in the same Missouri Valley Pond that kicked the Illini's ass in the NCAA 2021 tournamentfrom the Daily Illini:
Thoughts on potential future with Illinois
Certa, if he commits to Illinois, likely won’t have an immediate impact like Jaden Epps or Ty Rodgers. Certa will be a project for Brad Underwood, as the coach would be able to utilize his jump shot. But does that happen by Certa’s freshman year or junior year? With the Illini continuing to bring four-star guards and high-level transfers, Certa will have his work cut out for him while trying to earn minutes.
Certa’s court vision and perimeter shot provide a glimpse of what he could bring to the Illini. However, Certa will need to gain weight and hit the weight room.
Another valid question is whether Illinois is the most enticing offer in his mind. Ty Pence is headed off to Illinois State, where he will likely have an impact sooner than if he joined a Power-Six school. Is Certa willing to bet on himself that his play will translate against Michigan and Purdue? Or does he want to be the big fish in the Missouri Valley Conference pond?
Dougie...you are simply the KING with that illustrating correlation. Didn't you write this song back in 1990? Or maybe it was Hulka as I assume he's been through your most excellent scenario thousands of times. Poor fella.I don't feel the right to expect a kid to make a choice that I want him to make for my own personal desires in the same way I don't feel disappointed if a really attractive woman doesn't want to sleep with me just because I might want to sleep with her.

I've heard similar. He's got a great family but his ego can't fit through the door. My guess is he will go P5 and P5 onlyIMO, Maturity seems to be an issue. He's got time to work through it between now and next year. He's very talented, just from what I've seen and been told, he believes he is destined for bigger and better than the MVC and won't be convinced otherwise.
Again, just from what I've been told, the staff might be focusing closer on the kids from NCHS-Webber, Roman, and Walker.
ILLWolves 2024 6’5 Cole Certa Bloomington Central Catholic receives scholarship offer from Notre Dame#CPOSHe scored 19 tonight and his team will play for the Ship. I believe he had 16 in the second half. There wasn’t a whistle that he agreed with. .
FWIW, talk on the Badger board that Wisconsin is looking at him. Or should be looking at him. Looked at him this weekend at an AAU event. And Webber too it seems.ILLWolves 2024 6’5 Cole Certa Bloomington Central Catholic receives scholarship offer from Notre Dame#CPOS
