What are chances he recommits?

I think theyre pretty good considering he's not been playing much in AAU last time I heard, nobody bigger seems to be all that interested, and they landed some good recruits.

I think it's still possible. The big thing is winning our first few games before national signing day. Show him that the team is better than that team that lost to Charleston Southern, and by a combined 60+ points to Boise State and Nevada. Also, our freshman class for next year is zero, and With Boogie, MY, Key, and Phil out, he could step right in.

What? You think he would turn away a top 200 local kid who can put butts in the seat and be a big time get for the program because he holds a grudge and has his panties in a twist. Then please hire a new coach.

That is not what I insinuated.I simply do not know what went down , if anything, between Payton and the coaches. Its possible an some bridges were burned.

Latest rankings have him at 263 (lowest number rank currently with some ranking him with a higher number) nationally and either a 3 or 2 star recruit.

Do the numbers matter at this point? I believe there is something other than what the kid can do for the program going on. Surely someone knows something?

Ah Yea...they absolutely matter. The higher the ranking then the more press he will receive and the greater the chances that high majors will check him out which means more competition for ISU as respects to signing him. Once he or anyone officially signs/commits then who cares about the ranking as they have to go out and prove their own worth.

I don't know if the rankings matter per say, as I think big schools have already found him (hence, imo, why he decomitted). But, generally speaking usually when a kid commits to a school, and he isn't already say an ESPN top 25 recruit, they tend to stop updating things like stars and rankings. With him being back on the market, my guess is after the AAU summer season we will see his rankings move up.

I think if he decides he wants to recommit to ISU, Dan will have no problem giving him a scholarship. The kid can play and would make the team and program better.

Contrary to what you have stated some of the rankings have very recently been updated and for whatever reason Payton has been moving down in the rankings. In terms of exposure Payton recently played in 2 of the 4 EYBL sessions so he has had exposure at the highest level. If Muller wants him for ISU and believes he is a good recruit I hope Payton slips a bit more in the rankings as it will be easier for ISU to sign him.

I think the point might be that none of these scouting services are actively seeing him play since he had already committed. But they will see him play again this summer.

That is the point I am trying to get across is that the major period and most meaningful part of the "AAU season"(for lack of better term) has just finished and is over.....which is April and May. June is a dead month so no AAU tournaments and July goes live again but it is much less active than April/May. The scouting services have been very busy the last two months constantly updating their player rankings and trying to keep them current since this was the key evaluation period for coaches. Payton has had a lot of exposure to the scouting services via playing at least 8 games for MeanStreets. It does look like Payton played statistically better this past weekend in the EYBL games than he did in April so maybe he will move up a bit in some of the rankings?... which will be finalized in the next week. There will also be some movement in rankings after the July play but usually there is not a lot of significant change from final April/May rankings . ESPN final rankings usually comes out in early August but for whatever reason it does not appear that ESPN has Payton on their evaluation radar.

Payton's recruitment and offers could easily go on for another 6 months or longer or he could get one sooner and decide this is the program for me and commit. Given that he has already committed/decommited and has been bouncing around in the rankings it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

So "lots of big programs" are interested, but none willing to be named?

That's how I read it too. I don't think there are many big programs really interested, if any. Sure, they're keeping an eye on him but he seems to be a backup plan. Does sound like he will wait until the spring signing period. If the 'Birds have a good season he could end up recommitting.

"As of right now, I cant say there is anything I am looking for other than style of play. If that system is going to fit me and make me a better player," Payton said. "And also, if the coaches are going to invest in me and make sure that Im the player that I need to be."
ME ME ME ME I I I I
How about: "I want to find a good fit academically and with my future teammates. I would like to go to a school with a winning culture and be a part of that".

I thought the same exact thing while reading the article. It would be a challenge to coach a team if all 13 players had the same me me me attitude.

Chris will have options if he waits until the spring. Timmy is completely right; will he be our best option when that time rolls around?
