We launched the BirdFans4Ever Podcast a year ago wondering if we would ever make it to podcast #2. It's been better than ever imagined due to the players, coaches, and others surrounding the program who have been willing to join us and share their stories. Mr Pemberton's unbridle entusiasm for the Podcast and Redbird sports is the catalyst behind this, but your support has been awesome and continues to fuel the fire. Jon Diener and I are lucky to be along for the incredible ride!!
We are going to celebrate 1 year by commemorating each episode from Dan Muller to Colton Sandage by reposting each episode on the hour over the next 32 hours. I know many don't have Twitter so you can go directly to this link to see the Podcasts
32 amazing guests the past year and we will continue to line up more in season 2. We have some ideas for the next season like having teammates in the same episode, live podcasts, and a few others ideas we are spit balling.
As always, thanks for the support and let us know some of your favorite episodes from the past year viaTwitter or this board.
We really needed to infuse some talent in this podcast so our guest for this podcast is THE voice of the Redbirds, Dick Luedke. We coaxed Dick out of retirement to talk about how he got to ISU, calling a football vs basketball game, how a disagreement between a a certain head coach impacted the post game show, and memorable ISU games he called during his career.
Let us know what you think and we hope just hearing Dick's voice brings back fond memories!!
Great podcast!! What a true gift we have been given in the great Dick Luedke. A fantastic broadcaster and an even better person. It was good to hear Hoddy is alive and well in Vegas. I was amazed many of the players were unaware of the Donewald boycott of WJBC until just before this podcast was aired!Make sure you watch the very end of the podcast to hear Dick's call of the Jackie game winning 3 against Evansville
I was just a student that entered the fall of 84 and had no clue. It already had happened in previous seasons so I just thought it was that way. However, it's kind of surprising that it was kept that much under wraps that new players like Permebrton and Coleman didn't know about it. It's probably a reflection of the control Donewald had within the program.Great podcast!! What a true gift we have been given in the great Dick Luedke. Oh yeah. Control was a big thing for him…he remained friendly with Pantagraph Sports Editor Jim Barnhart, but not many other folks….I was just a student that entered the fall of 84 and had no clue. It was nothing significant from what he described. There was a call that went against ISU in a Bradley game. On a sports show Luedke said he thought it was the right call and thought Donewald felt the same way (I don't belive Donewald was on that show)What caused the Donewald/WJBC strife? Leudke mentioned it but didn't go into much detail...
Yeah I heard the part about the conversation between Leudke and Donewald and the split but I missed the part about the interpretation of the foul call that set it off. Later Luedke showed up at ISU and Donewald let him know he didn't agree and was mad about it. He let Luedke have it. The post game show moved to TV 10 the next year and WJBC was out. A few years later, they split the players between WJBC and TV10 but Donewald always went to TV 10. Luedke never had an interview with Donewald after that incident.
Haven't got to Luedke yet but coming up.Thank you for the Chuck interview!! I'll remind everyone again...of those 5 wins, that freshman-heavy team beat a very good and well-coached Creighton team (Harstad, Gallagher and a really nice PG in Duan Cole) at Redbird on 1990-91. Creighton advanced to the NCAA round of 32 the same year, losing a close game to Seton Hall...who advanced to the Elite 8.
Long story short, the 5-win year comes with a nice caveat! And we still averaged over 9100 fans a game!
