Good grief dude. He should have been fired.

Moser went 22-50 in conference play in 4 years as head coach. They were a Thursday team 3 times in those four years and dead last in the conference twice.

Eleven years later, he went to the final four on his first trip to the tournament.

So, let's play a game.

Dan Muller is 76-50 in conference in his years as coach, yet we insist he should be fired.

So, you can either elect to champion Porter as an ISU failure and champion Muller as a potential Final Four couch or to champion neither as any good. But you can't do both for another 7 full years. (Moser was not a HC for 5 years after ISU)

Porter had to be fired at the time. A lot of those teams were not competitive. Even the year they got the 6 seed they got destroyed by Creighton at Arch Madness. ISU did what it needed to, Moser left, got better and had success.

The one thing that I do think makes a difference in comparing Porter vs. Muller in MVC games coaching at ISU, is the league strength.

When Porter was here the MVC was ranked by the NCAA RPI as a conference in his 4 years at 11, 8, 6, and 6 (Average ranking of 7.7)
Whereas, under Muller the MVC has been ranked 8, 11, 9, 13, 12, 8, and 14 (Average 10.7).

It was a lot tougher to win games in the MVC when Moser was here.

Moser's teams would fair no better now than they did then.

A good read on the end of Barry.

Does this sound familiar???

"Then came the perfect storm. A renovation of SIU Arena prior to the 2010-11 season displaced long-time season ticket holders, many of whom walked away forever. Declining performance on the court combined with an increase in academic and disciplinary concerns led to Lowery’s firing in 2012, and local newspapers reported a loss of $500,000 in ticket revenue over his final three seasons. Average attendance in his final year was 3,299."
