Let’s play some hypotheticals on the upcoming season and use this thread to discuss the relative merits of our current coaching staff and their future at ISU. We’ll begin with three assumptions: 1st, the Birds will be considered a middle-bottom tier team in preseason polls (5th-8th); 2nd, our non-conf records mirrors our conf performance; 3rd, should the Birds win the regular season and Arch Madness OR we get an at-large bid to go dancing, then Dan will be given a couple-three more years to prove it wasn’t a fluke. Sound fair?

HYPOTHETICAL #1

Birds conform to pre-season predictions, finish in bottom 4, then:
A: Lose on Thursday.
B: Win on Thursday, lose on Friday.
C: Finish regular season strong winning final 5-6 games, win on Thursday, lose on Friday.
D: Surprise everyone and win Arch Madness and go dancing.

HYPOTHETICAL #2

Birds finish 4th - 6th, then:
A: Lose on Friday
B: Win on Friday, lose on Saturday.
C: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . no NIT, no CBI/CIT
D: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . no NIT, yes to CBI/CIT
E: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . yes to NIT
F: Win Arch Madness and go dancing

HYPOTHETICAL #3

Birds finish 2nd or 3rd then:
A: Lose on Friday
B: Win Friday, lose Saturday
C: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . no NIT, yes to CBI/CIT
D: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . yes to NIT
E: Win Arch Madness and go dancing

HYPOTHETICAL #4

Birds finish 1st (#1 seed), then:
A: Lose on Friday . . . yes to NIT (automatic)
B: Win Friday, lose Saturday . . . yes to NIT
C: Win Friday and Saturday, lose Sunday . . . yes to NIT

I'll go first in my next post.

Hypothetical 1:

A and B --> serious consideration of letting Dan go, though I don't think it'll happen
C --> consider giving one more year to see if he can build off the strong finish
D --> he'll get a couple more years

Hypothetical 2:

A - C --> serious consideration of letting Dan go, though I don't think it'll happen
D and E --> another year for sure, then see how they perform in post-season
F --> he'll get a few more years

Hypothetical 3:

Exceeding consensus expectations deserves another year (at least) to see if he can build off the strong season.

Hypothetical 4:

Seat cools off for a couple years.

Given what the MVC has devolved into, just going into the preseason projected as a lower tier team should put the Illinois State mens basketball coach firmly on the hot seat.

I might be speaking hypothetically here....but it sounds like you have way too much time on your hands... it is July. Relax. It won't matter if Birds win 4 games or 34 games next year... they'll give him an extension.
