Jake Kolbe, Luther Kirk, Spencer Schnell, and Nick Kielbasa.

It's clear Kolbe is taking is current role as backup with a positive mindset. I would be surprised if we didn't still see a decent amount of Kolbe this year despite Davis being the No.1

I believe the players elect most if not all captains .. interesting that Kolbe still got nod. Cool to see Kirk in back in fold.

I think you're right. With Kolbe, if you watch some of the summer camp recap videos, you can see him leading stretches, breaking down the team, and always front and center when the coach speaks. A lot of the same from this week's episode of The Next Step. I hope the team embraces Davis, because they obviously think highly of Kolbe.

This should put your "will our senior QB not start" arguments to bed.

Kolbe is your starter. ISU is going to have to lose 2 of the first 4 games due in large part to Kolbe to lose the reigns on this team.

I also expect him to have his best season, but that, I think, is a very fair expectation.

But...it was announced that Davis is the starter...hasn't it?

Oh my. Must've missed that. Then yes, this is the strangest captaincy I can think of.

Unless, that is, Kolbe voluntarily stepped down. With such a swift move, I can see that being possible.

This shows that the players think highly of Kolbe. No reason for him to step down from this role. Would you expect him to step down but still accept Kielbasa?

This is no different than other areas of life. My office saw a retirement earlier this year of a person that most people in the organization wouldn't know or necessarily "value", but all of us in the immediate area knew how huge that person's contributions were behind the scenes.

How is Kolbe being named a captain a shocker? It would be extremely alarming if he wasn't. He's a 5th year senior with tons of experience at the QB position and just recently lost out for the starters role.

I would guess this was a player vote which would indicate that Kolbe is held in high esteem by his teammates. Quite an honor for him if this is how it went. The QB on the field is in charge regardless of who has the "C" but in the end Leadership is an "action" not a "position". Many people do not understand this. Congratulations to all the Redbird Captains!

Davis is better, faster and by God better....I guess Tre was a wrong move as well....who was that senior QB he replaced? That guy was going to have the best season as well...a breakout year...a captain of the team...2 6-5 seasons say it all.....

Obviously you don't even bother to read the posts that you're supposedly responding to.

Great to see JK is still held at a high regard by his teammates and that he's showing senior leadership. I do wonder when the vote was held. The last practice they had was Saturday and the BD was announced as starting qb. I'd guess captains vote was before Saturday but still great to see JK as a captain.

Thank you. I admitted this some posts ago, but don't believe in deleting or changing posts.

But thanks for being classy.

"Voluntarily stepped down"???...i believe that typically only happens in sports when players know they are washed up and near retirement. Alternatively, hopefully Kolbe is a good as many feel he is yet our new QB is better?

obviously being a captain has much more meaning away from game field itself, so this is a minor point ... but not ideal that we will have 2 non-starters walking onto field today do coin flip. Again, not tangible issue but it can help psychologically to have your best players doing pregame intros and coin toss. That and 2 bucks will get the exact same cup coffee regardless.

The basketball team had two captains who were not eligible to play.
