Exactly, if you shot 34% at Belmont, SIU, Valpo and at Evansville you win 3 for sure and maybe all 4 statistically speaking. How would we feel about an 8-2 team? I know it’s simplistic because the ebb and flow of the game can be different if we are making a couple more. But it just highlights we do some things well and it is all negated by beyond bad shooting1.5 shots × 3 points is 4.5 points per game. That's a lot over 21 games.
The real issue there have been 3 to 4 horrible shooting games thst have led to losses. Norfolk, Valpo, SIU, and Evansville off the top of my head.
The other issue is that defenses are collapsing and making it more difficult to score. You won't see a game like North Dakota St where we predominantly scored from the paint.
Double our productivity! If we shoot better than 1-21 from 3, then we could have a chance to win this game.
So 2-21 might do it.
I posted this prior, but I don't agree with this at all. I think the 32-28% last year was the outlier. Here are the career numbers...The Redbirds are 345 of 351 in 3pt shooting %. Unless that improves, it's going to be tough to win games. Because as I learned in grad school, 3 is more than 2.
There's been talk on this board for years about standing around and just chucking up threes. I do have some glimmer of hope in this team because I don't feel that's their issue. I think for the most part, they are getting good looks, they just aren't dropping. The team has the yips and lacks confidence. I feel like it isn't possible to be this bad of a 3pt shooting team especially with what we saw from Mal, DB, and Luke last year, all 32-38%, with how Banks/JK started the year and Davis now coming on. They'll figure it out. Or maybe they won't. Who knows?
Mid range jumper / lost artIf ISU could just knock down a couple of the wide open 3s they take each game it’d be 4 more games in the win column. Shot selection largely isn’t the issue either. Yeah Foster, Lewis, even Burford taking 3s right now is terrifying. Banks, Pence, Johnny, Kasubke, Poindexter, Davis have all missed wide open and nobody within 15 feet 3s too often. It’s kind of insane.
Just for grins, from Kasubke's KState bio:I posted this prior, but I don't agree with this at all. I think the 32-28% last year was the outlier. Here are the career numbers...
Burford: 81/246 = 32.9%
Banks: 59/198 = 29.8%
Foster: 1/16 = 6.2%
Lewis: 49/167 = 29.3%
Poindexter: 68/207 = 32.9%
Kasubke: 71/236 = 30.1%
Davis: 55/185 = 29.7%
Outside of Foster, for good reason, those are NOT small sample sizes. People keep saying that we have to shoot better soon, we lack confidence, the ball doesn't move, the yips, we've seen it, etc... and that is just wrong. We're a team of career bad shooters. If we shoot it better for a stretch coming up that is likely the outlier. The numbers are there that this staff recruited bad shooters and you can't fix bad shooters who have been shooting the same way for 10+ years. We'll just have to hope they evaluate their recruiting and what they look for in shooting so this doesn't repeat itself.
Johnny has a very strong mid range jumper. It’s beautiful.Mid range jumper / lost art
Agreed, and it seems like with this team, if they can just see one go in early it changes the whole outlook for us. I remember recent games both Banks and Davis hitting an early 3 and it just seemed to get the team into more of an early flow. On the flip side, if they miss their first several, suddenly you're looking at an 0-fer and uh-oh, it's 'here we go again' and that early 0-4 balloons to 0-8, 10, 12, etc. pretty fast. The mental side of things, as many on here have alluded to.If ISU could just knock down a couple of the wide open 3s they take each game it’d be 4 more games in the win column. You bring up a good point. I still think it can be both. Confidence/mental is a big thing and it’s haunting this team. Couple that with them already being a pretty bad shooting team and you find yourselves where the Birds do now from deep.Agreed, and it seems like with this team, if they can just see one go in early it changes the whole outlook for us. Dude needs to re-calibrate his GPS on his shot otherwise he will get a scholarship offer from the Birds.
Redbird Hoops, is your team going to make a 3 today?
Where’s Foster going to go? 2nd time transfers weren’t permitted in a vast majority of cases this year. The institution schools demanded NCAA crack down.Let’s face facts. Another season is over for us and we haven’t improved. Foster is most likely gone to the portal this offseason. We have no reliable 3-point shooters. I will grant that our guard play has improved; but what has that got us? Basically we’re looking at another big failure of a season and no prospect of improvement next. A long time season ticket holder told me that sometimes programs are neglected and fall so low they never recover. We might want to consider that we are one of those now. I just don’t see any reason for optimism.
Transfer limitation remains murky. Logically to me, if ncaa was deemed to be restraining trade when they prohibited a player the ability to transfer at all why would the ncaa still not be restraining trade even if they allow one transfer? It is better but it still restrains a player.Where’s Foster going to go? 2nd time transfers weren’t permitted in a vast majority of cases this year. The institution schools demanded NCAA crack down.
Or Lieb?Hopeful for Davis tonight as well.
..this sentiment coincides with my belief that we need a major overhaul of ISU Athletic strategy. Maybe not if a fan is happy with ISU’s two major profile sports poor success rate all the while ISU ATHLETICS spends $$$ elsewhere to ensure securing the ALL MVC Sports trophy . When one factors in how much more ISU and the students are subsidizing the Athletic Department compared to peers then our lack of success (rather failure to perform) in men’s basketball and football is hard to fathom.Let’s face facts.
