Only nine assists for the entire game. You can't possibly say you are running a structured or disciplined offense when only around one-third of your field goals (9 assists on 26 field goals) come from an assist. We do not share the ball and the players are not making each other better.
Someone should track a stat for dribbling. I bet we are near the top on that!

Did we even get off the bus in Des Moines? DU hit a few shots at the start and we folded up our tents. Couldn't throw it in the ocean (shocker) and they couldn't miss. Defense was soft. We were slow. What a piss poor effort & execution. We are so far behind the good teams in the league it'd be laughable if it weren't so embarrassing. Dogshit. If you can't shoot (and we never can) then you better D up and learn to finish at the rim when you attack the basket. We'll be lucky to win 12.

I’m having a hard time understanding the heavy reliance on substitutions. I wonder if players are reacting with a subconscious fear that if they make a mistake, they’ll get yanked? The result leads to a “tightness” to their offense, where they never get a chance to settle down and get into a flow or rhythm and build trust in one another. Some subs have even come in (Davis) and performed nicely, but are subbed out in a flash. I’d love to see a game where the starters play a bigger chunk of time together and where the rotation is limited to 7 or 8 players…for an extended period of time. Let’s see what they can do! There are bright and talented players on this team. I believe if left to their own resources, they can figure things out and make games against upper tier teams more competitive. Right now, the offense looks too fragmented and disjointed and too predictable to me. Could the heavy substitution rate be causing some problems? Just wondering…

I think we had a 7 or 8 man rotation last night until the game was well out of hand. I didn't get the impression that guys were being subbed unless they were gassed.

Yes, for last night, you're probably right. I should have noted that this has been my observation over the course of a good amount of games. Just wondering...do you think the amount of substituting-in general-has been a bit excessive?

I agree. I felt like he needed to get some fresh legs in there. After giving up a 17-0 run, then going on a 11-0 run, some guys needed a quick breather. Brodie has 40 lbs on Foster, Foster definitely needed a breather.

With the team we have, I'd be running a lot of pick and roll at the top of the key between KLew/Foster and Burford and the bigs, and then part of the time I'd probably run Mal off some screens on the baseline to get open and utilize his shooting ability. I'd probably also increase the tempo to capitalize on Burford's speed.
If only our bigs would roll TO THE FREAKIN BALL. Most of the time...not exaggerating...they roll with their back to the ball. I watch for this all the time. How in the bleeping bleep can you catch a ball, on the roll, if your back is to the ball? This is junior high stuff, man. I don't see us setting our 3 pt shooters up...hardly ever. And I don't see an increased tempo. Total bummer.

I'm amazed that Myles can go 20 and 15 in Rupp Arena and then...1 rebound. Mind bender.

Oh well. See ya Saturday. I hope we send birdturds from on high right on those leg lifting egyptians. That would be stone soul gas, man.

We can't have all these "Seniors" back next year. We need at least 4 additions from the portal to even have a chance to close the gap with Drake. Or we hope DeVries moves on and takes most of this team with him.
This is Redbird basketball…instead of getting better, let’s hope the good teams leave…

You might be right, I haven't paid close enough attention. I do recall seeing guys lined up to sub when the guy they came into sub for just hit shot. I'll try to pay closer attention.

Hopefully that gets the lid off like many were hoping. I never watched him in high school, but his release seems slowwww. Just me?
He sets up well but his release is somewhat slow for basketball at this level. This is no surprise, though, to anyone who has been watching him for the last 5 years. I anticipate it'll get better. And...if he hits some shots, that release won't look nearly as slow. I see such potential in him. But ya gotta produce, too.

Perhaps not the overall substituting but I have noticed a quick yank at times that makes me cringe for the player. Sometimes I understand it, sometimes I don't...but I'm viewing it from the stands, and not from the viewpoint of a staff that watches these kids day in and day out.

Pence still looks a bit tentative and pressing with his shot. Would like to see him drive more aggressively to the basket and let the outside shot come as it comes. Really good strength and athleticism, though. Strikes me as a great kid, see him often cheering for his teammates from the bench. Very coachable. Loved seeing him pump his fist after hitting his 3. Let the flood gates open for this kid. Rooting for him!

I'm going to admit that I didn't watch a lot of the game as I was working last night. But, I did see a little late in the 1st half. Number 51 (the best basketball ever as a young benchwarming isuquinndog wore that number) for Drake was just having his way with Foster and any one else inside. Just pushing him around, doing whatever he wanted. Any one else surprised it looked that easy against our interior defense?

I think the rolling with the back to the ball is a product of the offense design. They likely don't look for the ball, because they aren't designed to get it, they are just moving down to get in position. We haven't evolved our offense in the 1.5 years so far, so I'm not saying its going to happen, but what I'd do were I coaching.

Brodie outweighs Foster by 40 lbs.

Hard to tell at times if it’s bad coaching or bad execution or both - sometimes they’re a factor of each other. Multiple drives this game the held defender has been looking at the on-ball defender with his hands up and vice versa. More often that not our body language looks like guys who are sick of other guys making mistakes. The lack of trust on the floor is hurting us on both sides.
Speaking of not having the seniors back and grabbing 4 from the portal, it’s not like the cream of the crop is coming to play here. Staff have been portal picking for two years now, it’s hard man.
