The latest Luedke Rewind is Dick calling the NCAA round 2 game against Arizona ... a team filled with future NBA players. The Birds had 2 starting guards injured and were tied just after halftime when the wheels came off the bus. That 1998 team was special as well as the announcer.

I was a freshman in the band that year. What a trip that was. Winning vs Tennesee was one of the highest feelings I've ever had as a sports fan and it was only surpassed by the Cubs in 2016.

And man, we were pumped at halftime to be tied. "Could we really pull this off?!"

No, we couldn't. Arizona decided they should start playing and with the injuries, we just didn't have the horses to compete against all that NBA talent. But it was fun for 20 minutes!

Dude I'm jealous. I've always believed if we had our whole roster playing...that would have been a game. Was Arizona better than us? Yes. But out of 10 games, I bet we'd win a couple of them. That ISU squad was a very seasoned, well-coached team and our best team in the last 38...perhaps even 40 years. Will we ever see such a seasoned, mentally tough group of veterans (who also had game) like that again...or the Donewald Dancers...or the Smithson run and gunners?? MAN I hope so.

Love the Lomonica episode, this is one of my favorite episodes that I have watched. Thank you guys.
Lamonica is an encyclopedia of knowledge and stories post 1980-ISU. He was the SID at Evansville the sports season following the terrible plane crash that wiped out the entire Evansville men's basketball team...except for one player who was injured and not on the plane...and in a bizarre and terrible twist of fate...he died in a car accident with his brother 2 weeks later. I can't even begin to make sense of that.

We used to tease Tom about all the change he would carry in his pockets. You could hear him coming from a mile away. When it was Christmas-time it sounded like Santa Claus coming in his sleigh.

Turns out, Tom IS Kris Kringle and Claire is Mrs Kringle. Tom and Claire funded a substantial endowment to the communications department...in part by Tom saving his spare change. Tom did not and does not make big bucks at ISU, ok? Next time you see him, stop and say hello because the man's intentions towards ISU are nothing but heart and sincerity.

Tom is an excellent person and it was a great episode. He impacts so many people, he couldn't possibly keep track of all of them.

After I graduated from the School of Communication, I did what most new grads do...take the first job you're offered with no consideration to anything other than "what does it pay." I was thrilled to be done with school. After about 6 months, I knew it wasn't for me. I dreaded going into work everyday and knew something had to change. New grad, 6 months on the job, opportunities were limited. Sure, I could apply for other jobs but how could I avoid finding myself in the exact same spot 6 months down the road?

In a round about way, I got connected with Tom. I had met him a handful of times during school. He met with me and convinced me that to be qualified for the types of jobs I was interested in, Grad school was the way to go. Obviously, I scoffed. I had JUST gotten out of school where I took 4-5 classes each semester, at least 1 over the summer and was working two jobs a combined 65+ hours per week depending on which sports were in-season. I was excited to be down to one "normal" 40/hr per week job and no school. I wanted to focus on making enough to start paying down student loans and the thought of taking on more debt was tough. Tom explained it to me in a way my 22 year old brain wouldn't have come up with on its own.

He said, "Yeah, the cost is something that needs to be considered. But we also need to stop looking at it like that. Stop thinking about it as a "cost" and start thinking of it as an investment in yourself." He went on to provide examples of how much grad school costs and what doors having a Master's degree opens. It opened my eyes to a completely new option I had ever considered. That conversation took place in October. I applied for grad school a few weeks with a letter of recommendation from Tom, and was enrolled the following January.

A lot of folks have been have had an incredible impact on my life but I owe this one to him. I'll never be able to thank him enough for his time, generosity, and advice.

Our latest podcast features former Redbird Rob Gibbons who played on 2 NCAA and 2 NIT teams in the 90s. Rob talks about how he came to ISU with 2 garbage bags of clothes, thr captains' unsuccesful negotiations with coach Stalling, highlights of their Europe trip, and worse introduction ever. Rob is truly an entertaining person and you won't want to miss this one.

It is just an outstanding compliment to Bird Fans 4 Ever for these wonderful interviews, trips down memory lane, and the insight we gain. In addition, to hear Coach Pedon talk about listening to these podcasts to gain knowledge and appreciation for the history of Redbird Basketball is GREAT.

Does anybody know where I can find Protect The Nest beer in the Peoria area? They get pictures I went to one of the stores that sells their beer in Eureka but they didn't have that particular one.

Our latest guest is Jon Pemberton's former teammate Sonny (Roberts) Wray. He goes by Wray now and tells you why in the podcast.

Sonny was part of a successful Rockford Boylan program and talks about a frustrating first year redshirting and losing to Chicago State. He also tells us which valley town literally stinks and being part of NCAA team was the best.
