My brother coaches at Downers Grove North. Said he can shoot the 3 really well for a 7 footer and wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the NBA someday. My brother also being an Illini grad wished he got more time on the floor. Sounds like we are in for a treat. Great job Pedon.

Very excited to see what he can do, and thanks for starting a thread. This is a very good get for us.

Does your brother have any other insight he could have on him such as defense, passing ability, etc.?

Good to have him on board. Hopefully, he gets the chance he's looking for and can take advantage. I'm guessing if he'd signed with ISU after HS, we would have been pretty happy.

  • Third-team All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association
  • All-conference selection in the Central Suburban League North
  • Honorable mention All-Area pick by the Pioneer Press
  • Averaged 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as a senior
  • Helped lead Deerfield High School to a 20-11 record, including an IHSA Class 3A regional championship and appearance in the sectional semifinals
  • Had 24 points and 14 rebounds in Deerfield’s regional title win over Mundelein Carmel (3/6/20)
  • High school coach was Dan McKendrick
  • Played for the Illinois Wolves AAU program, coached by Mike Mullins
More:
In his senior year at Deerfield, Lieb averaged 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks. Lieb was a two-star prospect when he committed to the Illini and the No. 11 ranked center prospect in the state of Illinois’ Class of 2020. He held high major offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and DePaul before deciding to play for the Illini.

A big who can shoot is a dangerous thing. If he can also play inside, then that's a weapon.

Randy's article says he wants to start shooting more whereas his role at Illannoy was to be down low. I gotta admit, it made me cringe a little. How many near 7 footers are going to come through the door and just want to stand on the perimeter? Abdou, Liam, Joe P.... Hopefully, he can hit a mid-range and 3 ball but his focus is in the paint. Now, if he comes out and shoots 40+%.....let em fly.

I think of Levi as well. Wasn't the best post player but became a dangerous 3-point shooter. Him trailing the break and getting a kickout was a big part of our transition game in those years. A true post would be great. A long 5 who can hit 3s would be great. A guy who is pretty good at BOTH, would be ideal.

Him saying he wants to shoot more doesn’t concern me. He didn’t take a single 3 at Illinois. They wanted him to play like Kofi and Dainja. As long as he doesn’t float at the 3 pt line nonstop like Liam then I’ll be happy.

I am hoping for a 5 that has good hands down low and can pass the ball out of the paint. Moving the ball in and out and side to side opens up the offense and creates spacing. We have not had this luxury for quite some time from a big. If Lieb fits the bill for this then another high percentage shooter would be a nice complimentary dimension to the offense as well.

Maybe you'll be able to share some light on this? I asked an friend who's an Illinois fan and he said he thought he would be an instant upgrade at ISU especially on the defensive end with his height and range. He wasn't sure about the offensive end since he didn't really get the opportunities at Illinois but defensively he will be much improved over what we had last year.

Correct. He’s had to guard Kofi Cockburn and Dain Dainja in practice for 3 years. Nobody in the MVC is close to that level. As long as he can stay out of foul trouble he’ll be fine on that end.

I like the Levi comparisons. Kinda play him in a Troy Murphy-esque role as a guy on the "long" (not BIG) base of a 1-3-1 trapping D with some shot distraction and the outcome of a high-post trai top-of-key off of turnovers.

It might be an interesting thing offensively, to have Chase Walker in the post and Lieb on the perimeter working a high low game
And get the guards driving & kicking, penetrate & radiate...screw with opposing defenses. Twist 'em & f**k with 'em.
