Would the fact that we already have a pretty good 6-4 (same as Cole Serta) shooting guard committed to Illinois State maybe affect his decision to want to come here? That same recruit (Ty Pence) just dropped 41points on him a few weeks ago (Cole had 22)
No. I think his decision to come here will likely be impacted by having offers from 20+ way better college basketball programs.

Yup. Pence is more of a higher scoring KLew. Certa is a 2 guard. Spot up, shooter that can slash a bit.
Wouldn’t call his comp KLew unless you mean purely body type. Saw Pence walking around the arena before a game and he is every bit of the 6’6” he’s listed at.

Both can be true. We were in early and he can see “I’m not sure I’m beating out some guys for early minutes and bigger programs are offering.” If we can’t offer day 1 minutes then we are out of the running and it doesn’t really matter.

This would be under the impression somehow that Pence and Certa couldn’t… both play? They have vastly different games. If Cole Certa wanted to come here and play minutes day one, he would. That is the best thing ISU could offer him in place of what P5’s are selling.

But you stay on him and continue to develop the relationship. As a friend who coached against him in high school, he don't play defense and with the depth that Illinois has at guard and the way Underwood is recruiting him if he goes to Illinois he won't play and in a year or 2 enter the portal. Imo he would be better at Iowa or a school like that.

I was thinking more that we’d be looking at super senior (provided Covid years utilized) for Poindexter, Kasubke, DB + adding Pence and Kinziger. If all goes to plan that’s a crowded backcourt. Promising day 1 minutes as of now over any of those would be wild.

One of the best things that can happen to a HS recruit is having a big time college coach come to one of your games…… it also can be one of the worst things..

Right. I was saying more body type + versatility. In college, Pence could play the 2-4, where Certa is really pigeon-holed at the 2.

Ty is much bigger physically than Certa is right now. Not saying he won’t had more muscle in the next year and a half, but pence is already college game ready body wise. He’s also bigger than 6’4” Would guess he’s probably 6’6” I’d be excited to have either, have seen both put on a show this year multiple times.
I was only going by Bird Friend’s post, which listed Ty Pence as 6-4.

Seems ISU has given up on him

Illini assistant Geoff Alexander was there last night, I have seen him at 5-6 games this year, Underwood at 2

Certa is in town and I have seen Pedon at 1 game in November, it would be easy to have an ISU coach at most home games to watch, but seems like they aren’t even trying

That usually means they’ve been told or have been given the sense that the kid has no desire to play here.

Pedon was at his game in December when they lost to U-High in the SF Classic. As I said earlier in the thread, its time to move on from this one. Based on everything I've heard, that's what is best. It's nice that Underwood is targeting him and all but how many years will be sit on the Illannoy bench before deciding to move on after he gets recruited over?

Also, have an assistant at every home game? They only had two assistants this year....

No it's not. Said player wants to attend a school in a bigger conference. I'd much rather we use our resources and time on players who might want to be at ISU.

You’re right. Not disappointing we couldn’t get a rising, quality player from the area.

I guess it depends on how you define disappointing. I'm not disappointed that we couldn't change a kid's heart if he has a goal of playing in a big conference and is receiving interest from teams in those conferences. It's like being disappointed because a very attractive woman isn't interested in you. In this same regard, I wasn't disappointed that Keita Bates-Diop (from U-High) chose to go to Ohio State (he's having a nice start to his NBA career with the Spurs).

Some kids want to come to places like Illinois State because they see an opportunity to build a program that has been down and feel up to the challenge that they can be a catalyst for this transformation. Ty Pence has stated he saw this opportunity and embraced it, despite having offers from bigger conference schools including Illinois. John Kinzinger's recruiting stock was growing before he decided to commit early to Illinois State and also stated his desire to be part of rebuilding our program. These are the kinds of kids I want at Illinois State, those that want it for their reasons, not mine.

Disappointment can only come as a result of expectations not being met. In this case, you can only be disappointed if you felt a right to project an expectation on him that he never agreed to, only because it aligns with your personal desire.

I don't feel the right to expect a kid to make a choice that I want him to make for my own personal desires in the same way I don't feel disappointed if a really attractive woman doesn't want to sleep with me just because I might want to sleep with her.

Now, if a kid led us on and told us that he wanted to come to Illinois State and as a result, we invested a lot of time recruiting them only to see them back out of our commitment after we had passed up on other recruiting opportunities, I would be disappointed. Justin Dentmon comes to mind as a disappointment.
