I know he was hurt for a game (or maybe a couple), but I was hoping we would see more out of Petrakis. He has really struggled to have any impact whatsoever outside of the first two games.
He's got the Yips. I believe he thinks the shot is not going in ... 24.4% shooting for the year.

There was some discussion on here earlier this season about the point guard situation for next year. To me, it has become increasingly obvious we need a true point guard with experience to run our offense. Malachi is the best we have for that role and he's been serviceable, but I think we would be better with him spending more time at the 2 if it were possible. I like the guards we have and think we have good talent and experience, just are lacking a point guard.
How do you get the type of PG everyone thinks we need? Our program has fallen so far, there isn’t a whole lot this program can offer up to recruit the type of talent we need.

This team not only needs s true point guard, but also a post man. He admittedly does not play our post players because they can't play his defense. Coach P has to create 2 spots for transfers next year. No way the freshmen will immediately fill that need next year.

Today's offense looked a lot like the Dan Muller point(less) guard offense. Lots of time flinging the ball around perimeter, not much penetration (mixed in with the occasional drive that ends up being in too deep to finish). An inordinate amount of air balls. Lewis is lost; I cringe when I see him putting the ball on the floor. The bench is also too long. Hard to know who is hot/not on any given night when so many are getting on the court (this generally occurs only in the first half).

Pedon, on the radio post-game, lamented the fact he did not have a true post player to be able and work an inside-out offense. My thought is a good coach can find a way to get production with the players they have; wondering if Ryan is struggling not having the parts he prefers to have in order to run the style he wants and has yet to land on a viable consistent alternative.

It isn’t about getting a true point guard. We just need someone to lead this team. ISU hasn’t had that in a long time. Paris Lee wasn’t a true point guard. He took bad shots and wasn’t averaging 7 assists a game. But he was a leader and was respected.

This team lacks more of of a true post presence than guards.

I guess that is one frustration for me. You had to know what you had regarding post players, we completely collapsed last year after Chatmans injury. You couldn’t find one inside guy in the portal? Anywhere? Im not talking Wilt Chamberlain, but our post play is probably 11th or 12th in the league.

We are averaging 14.7 TO per game. That is the most since the 06-07 when we average 15.1 and 05-06 season we averaged 16.1

Frustrating game. Couldn't protect a cup of warm piss, let alone the ball. Having our post guys stand around the perimeter on offense is silly and they had no awareness of the basket on defense. Their guys were just waltzing right in, especially in the second half. We also missed a lot of high percentage shots when we actually did attack the rim. Jacobsen called a smart timeout when we cut it to 4 with 8 mins left. Finally had some momentum and the crowd got into it and he quashed it. Next possession Mal got cute with that behind the back shit, they came down and scored and we never recovered.

It’s always cool to single out one player and one turnover. That turnover didn’t cause the L. Mal is doing his best playing out of position. Actually he’s the best option to run the point. What’s your take on that? Every basketball team on every level have its best shooters taking majority of its perimeter shots. Our bigs all have the green light to take the long ball shot which is stupid with the exception of Liam. We don’t have a true big and that’s more of a problem than only having a serviceable pg in Mal. The other thing is this is a really selfish team. Did anyone catch one of our players slapping the hand away from one of his teammates, I did. Too many kids want to be Batman on this team and not a Robbin. Sure Mal playing 1 can Jack em up from anywhere but that would be so selfish of him to do. Honestly he needs to be a bit more selfish hunting his shot, that’s what a bunch of these kids are doing right now. There are 3 kids shooting better than 42% right now from 3. Offense is our problem and too many kids are having the ball in their hands looking to create buckets for themselves. Ponder this. Imagine not having a serviceable pg on this team right now. How would that look?

Mal is fine, I only singled out that play because it was at a key moment. We score there its a 2 point game with tons of time left. Our problems are far bigger than one guy/one play but that one stuck out to me in terms of an impact possession.

Mal should hunt for that open look a bit more. He’s got a nice 3 pt shot, but doesn’t pull it out often. Same way I’d like to see Luke look to score a bit more too. Liam was a hot hand early yesterday and quit looking for his shot for a long stretch. I don’t know if I’d call the team selfish but just lacks a true go to guy. It looks to me like a team still learning itself. They find it for a bit each game then it goes away as fast as it comes.

Also, Kendall Lewis needs to calm down. He is pressing way too much to break out of his slump. We don’t have enough quality post players for him to just be taken out of his game entirely.

My thing is every shot isn’t a good shot. Too many of these kids take bad shots. If that’s not being pointed out then it won’t change. Luke and Mal need to be on the floor more and the rotation needs to be reeled in. We’re losing close games way too often. Once again Batman needs a Robbin. Who’s our Batman when we’re loaded with Robbins?

Pedon has us going in the right direction. Those close games will fall the Redbird's way in a year or two.

Agree with kids not hunting for their shots. Too much passing up what could have been a good shot, for a bad pass. I bet half of our turnovers occur when we drive, stop and spin looking to pass out. We have some high and outside dribblers on the team who can't protect the ball in that move. Im sure thats the style Pedon is going for, but this roster lacks that skill. He needs to adjust to what the roster provides. Mal is my choice for PG. He's the only guard with a positive assist to turnover ratio. Burford next, though both are better at the 2. Both are stellar from the line, need to up the opportunities. Them and Mayor McNormal can get to the rim and create

We have to get Lewis out of whatever funk it is that is holding him back. Not gonna win many without fixing him

Mayor McCheese is our best player. Would like to see him take the leadership role.

20 turnovers. UNI scored 20 points off of our turnovers. There’s the game.
Yep and I still say most of our turnovers are from players trying to create their own buckets attacking the rim from too far out. That’s gotta change going forward. We’d be better off posting them up even if they’re undersized. At least we could get to the free throw line doing so instead of having a turnover. The design of this offense allow them to play the way they are. No one seem to be talking about the team’s basketball IQ. Trust me it’s not good. Seeing them compete is wonderful though, they do play hard.

Pops you sure have changed your tune on this team. The biggest thing I see overall is what you see...a lack of floor awareness...which is the IQ.

Yes I’ve changed my tone but not about the shooting of this team at all. It’s the system to be honest. Did you know the Redbirds are the only team in the conference that have 3 players in the Top Ten for players 3 PT %? If this doesn’t tell you it’s more about the system then I don’t know what to say. With all the turnovers coupled with players doing too much that their skill set don’t allow causing the turnovers how can it be anything other than the system.

I want to believe that McCheeseMan is our best player, but until he fills in the intangibles consistently...I don't believe he's there yet or frankly anywhere close. I'll say it again but a few of those intangibles are offensive rebounding, altering shots, and consistently being a double figure scorer. We see his offensive promise with a couple of high scoring games...but he also can be completely shut out of the offensive end with defenders that want to really belly up to him physically. So...when he's not scoring (which I anticipate is going to be 50% of games)...how is he impacting the game and our team? When that impact is as high as a 25 pt game...then the kid's a player. THAT'S what I want to see out of him and I do believe he is capable. His lower body does limit his capability, however.

His ceiling is high and I'm rooting like heck for him. I think he's the kind of player that constantly needs to be pushed to be better. I'm curious...who on staff is the bad cop with him??

Happy New Year, Hulk!

Three pretty fine recruits so far. And I know of at least a few players on the roster who, despite the inconsistency with a first year coach (man, how did we not expect that?) are pretty damn happy playing for Pedon.
Or are they just pretty damn happy having a D1 scholarship and a free education with no expectations. That's a nice gig.

Pedon has said what offense he wants to run. Through a big man in the post. We don’t really have that so this is what we are doing.
