We seem to get better shots when we push the ball with control. It appears that the staff is concerned we are going to turn the ball over or something because we are consistently slowing it down to run the half court set.
Slowing it down in the halfcourt is exactly what Pedon wanted to do. We got plenty of good looks out of it. Pedon found Murray is at their best when they get out and run while dictating tempo (see their win against aTm). The game plan didn’t cause the unforced turnovers.

Prohm even said in the postgame they expected that strategy out of Pedon. Prohm said when he was at Iowa State and played Ohio State that Ohio State slowed it down, ran 30 seconds off the shot clock and played zone defense. Ohio State won so I liked the strategy a lot by Pedon.

I was very encouraged with that effort and game last night, that kind of effort and style is something that I can watch. I loved Poindexter at the point with Burford off the ball, getting more chances to score as he gets comfortable and really not thinking so much. I like what I am seeing out of the first 7 kids now as others have said I wish Petrakis, Kotov, Andrews, or Sissoko would step up, play defense and rebound and set screens on offense. Outside of Petrakis the offense isnt there and not sure you need offense out of them but another guy or 2 stepping up would be great. Also appeared Sandage had been sick this week as to why he didn't play as much.
Birds now have 3 games in 6 days and 4 of the next 5 games at home. Hopefully they can string together a winning streak and get some confidence as the schedule will turn the corner. Also as Pedon said last night hats off to the administration for a charter flight home last night over a 4-5 hour bus ride. A quick turn around on Sunday with 3 guys playing over 40 minutes last night, rest and hydration will do them good.

Would have liked to see Luke in over joe when Liam fouled out. Not like Liam was getting any rebounds anyway.
Agree. Thought why didn't Kazooski replace McC

Played better than we have been tonight

Knight and Poindexter are stepping it up

If we score on the second OT possession I think we would have won

Prohm should have expected it. It's been a consistent strategy the entire year. We have yet to score 70 points in a game (even with one game in OT). You better be an outstanding defensive team or very efficient in the half court offense ..... which we have not been so far. Here are some offensive statistics through eight games. 363 teams in D1

Pts 62.0 343
FGM 20.6 354th
FGA 51.0 352nd
FG% 40.4% 317
2pt FG% 47.3% 291
3pt FG% 31.9% 259
Off Rb 8.5. 310
TO 14.9 285
PF 19.5 317

Anemic attempts coupled with poor efficiency is not a recipe for success.

My initial point is that there have been opportunities when we have the numbers and we don't take advantage. We also have not been efficient on offense. I don't have any stas to back it up but the few times we have pushed the ball we seemed to get some better shots.

I also don't think we make the other team work tremendously hard in defense even though we have long possessions. We generally dribble out front 10 seconds or work high screen and pop ... there is little movement by the rest of the team. This is not like the Loyola offense where they wore you done with long possessions and constant movement

The one real positive offensively has been FT shooting

FT% 81.2. 8th
However
FTA 16.6. 252

Don't get me wrong I thought they played better yesterday than in the tournament however I am not as high on Murray as many folks are. I see them finishing 5 to 7 in the league. I don't think they are a good perimeter shooting team. I have seen several of their games and they are streaky. I do think they have quickness and their penetration needs to be contained. We did a much better job of that the last 25 minutes.

Only if we stop committing so many turnovers, taking too many shots in traffic in the lane and have some dribble penetration and kick outs. We need to push the pace a lil more too.
We dribble too much. We never pass cut, or plain rotate the ball without dribbling for a lengthy time.

Hopefully my staff put it on if anyone requested. We have both ESPN+ and NBCSN (and maybe even CBSSN - we haven’t needed to check yet) and I try to stay ahead of what sports - especially Redbird-related) are on each day.
We will remember that next time. We couldn't make it to uptown until the second half. We went to 3 different college bars with no ISU game on. I'm not sure the workers knew there was a game, let alone the students.

Do we all agree the Redbird teams from the last few years loses that game by double figures in regulation?

Hell of a fight with a lot to clean up. Feels like one that Murray didn’t win it, the Birds lost.
Only after getting out to a 12 pt lead in the 1st half!

I agree with the fight and effort. That is refreshing to see.

They clearly played better than the Rhode Island and LSU games which was also good to see but our offense wasn't very good and it ultimately cost us the game.

The 20-21 team for sure would have lost by double digits and I say 15 to 20. Definitely would have not had any heart to fight back into the game

The 21-22 team prior to ACL tear by Chatman could have competed just as well if not better depending on the night. We were 10-9 and then went 3-11 after he tore his ACL in Evansville. We haven't had an inside presence since then.

Remember last year's team with Chatman lost by 12 to a Murray St team that went 31-3 last year. Murray is not anywhere near the same this year. A beter measurement would be to compare last year's Murray team to this years LSU team. LSU is comprised of last year's Murray coach, 3 ex Murray players and some of their recruits. They stuffed us this year.

I agree with this. This isn't an effort thing, IMO. It's a they aren't good enough to crack the rotation thing. We have a large enough sample size to know this by now.
Then why would Pedon call out those that didn’t play? If they aren’t good enough, then asking them to play harder won‘t help. And I’ve seen enough of Sissoko to know he has plenty of talent and ability, he just can’t figure how to play D. Besides, who else would Pedon be calling out?

Well if they aren't talented enough, which is pretty obvious to most people here, then they sure as shit better work harder if they want to sniff the floor in a supporting role. Seems pretty simple to me. We have differing opinions on talent, I guess. Sissoko has plenty of talent, but can't play D? What exactly does he do well? He had one stellar game his freshman year. Just like Emon Washington.

It's pretty obvious at this point which players from the previous regime Pedon believes in. Kotov, Sissoko, Andrews and Schmitt are obviously not in that group.

Every time I watch the Birds I keep wondering who the extra grad assistant is . . . then realize that's Dakich.

Never in my wildest considerations would I have thought to give Malachi that shot to tie . . . great shot, tho. Clutch.
Malachi is a great shooter off of curls and screens. He’s much better at that than catch and shoot.

Did Pedon specifically call out those 7 that didn’t play because of lack of effort in the postgame? Or did he just decide to go with 8 guys in yesterdays game because it gave the team the best chance to get a win?

I enjoyed the game last night. It is easier to get behind a team that busts their butt for 40 minutes than it is an extremely talented team that doesn't care. Like others have said there are some things to clean up. Need to find a way to get Petrakis going. McChesney is playing with more confidence which I think is huge. If we can get him going that will help a ton. My big thing is to not see a letdown Sunday.

He did not. When I said he "made a statement," I was referring to only playing 8 and not looking at the bench past the 8 that did play. He did not explicitly call out those that did not play.
