Zach Cleveland 6'7 PF Normal Community:

"Cleveland might be the biggest stock riser in the state as he will see a massive jump in the next rankings update. The skilled face up four man who runs with the Illinois Hoopstars on the Prep Hoops Circuit has several visits lined up. SIU-Edwardsville on June 3, Belmont on June 11, Liberty June 13, Wofford June 21, Loyola on June 28, and Southern Illinois on June 30."

I mean based on those qualifications im a little surprised he chose Liberty over Belmont.
Belmont probably was near the top of his list but they did not qualify for the 2021 ncaa tourney and liberty won a game in the 2019 tourney. Liberty the last three years is better than Belmont. They were 30-4 in the season covid killed. I’d argue liberty > Belmont at this current date.

I'd argue that they are relatively the same. Liberty had a higher win total in the year that COVID killed, but they played a Jank schedule all year. Belmont won 26 that year, and would have also made the NCAA tourney. The only difference is Liberty made it last year, Belmont didn't, but that could easily flip flop this year. I'd also argue that Belmont has the higher pedigree.

That said, based on the various things I've been reading about Zach, a lot of recruiting folks believed that he would have ended up at a HM program if he would have waited, so I'm surprised he committed not only to Liberty, but this early.

The timing of the commitment seems way early. He has an entire summer of AAU ball ahead and often the most visibility happens the summer between Jr and Sr year. I would not at all be surprised to see him reopen his recruitment in the next couple of months.

This is what I was thinking.

Article from benson. Couple things stuck me here- it’s noted Liberty was on him the entire process. Dan who lives in the same town was not? Also, making the ncaa tournament matters folks…

"If not for the COVID year (2020), they would have gone to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row," said Cleveland. "They're looking to continue that. I'm a very competitive guy and like winning, and that's what they do."

"Coach McKay was the only head coach I talked to through the whole process. He really was interested," said Witzig. "They watched Zach's high school games online ... I would get off the bus and the assistant coach would text me what a great game Zach had after we had a win."

Doesn’t seem to be the case:

"It's really stress free now," he said. "I was expecting to play through July and make a decision before the high school season. But I didn't want to waste any coach's time."

May not be . . . but the summer's not over and he could still get some serious interest from somebody more 'enticing' . . .
