Yes, which is why you need to build confidence that you can put a team away with your offense and not just rely on defense. Honestly, if I was an offensive player I would not want anywhere near Coach Spack. If I was a defensive guy I would be anxious to play for him. I sat there watching this debacle for the last couple of minutes saying over and over 'We should not be in this position. We should be aggressively going for a score or first downs. Do not give them the ball back. That would be a huge lift for YSU!" It was a huge lift and they made them pay! Congrats to YSU. They earned it and we did not deserve it. Maybe it is time for a change.

Didn't help that the game clock didn't run after YSU got their timeout back after the 2nd review where the 1st down was upheld. Gave YSU an extra 40 seconds at the end.

Valley refs gonna Valley refs I suppose...

Also, I'm not delusional Birds did in fact suck...

Yes he played a great game. Issue if you go back look at game it was design runs play call for him to run don’t think coaches trusted him to read option just look at how ball was hand off to RB. Fact wright was still injured even though he had some good runs. Why not use the other backs he was limping every other players. ISU did not once try to throw any short passes to TE even with wind no short screen passes to Carr or Buck those guy turn 3 yard plays into 1st downs. Also saw a few plays early in game where they ran in the middle which ball should have been kept by QB or given to Carr in motion! The 31 yard pass was the back break and YSU was throwing in the wind … Why were we blitzing know YSU needs a score show blitz and back out cover an running up middle and make YSU beat u with throw short passes a tackle we inbounds which kills clock imagine 2/3 pass stops of 7 yards YSU runs out of time

It's tough to see the EMLOS crash and the QB not pull. The few he did, did it ever not work?

I mainly agree. I would have liked it if Rittenhouse had pulled the ball and kept it more often. It did seem to work every time but that may be because they didn't run it too often. Rittenhouse is also 180 lbs., and we were already down to our #2 QB. If he runs more there is a greater chance that he gets injured or fumbles. We take it for granted that our RBs are well coached and they don't fumble very often. But ok, this game just about eliminates our playoff chances if we don't win so in the end I'll side with you that he should have kept it more.

Zero points in the 2nd half. That's a major buzzkill after getting 17 in the 1st half. Let's see, starting QB Annexstad out for the game, starting RB Mueller has been out all season, #2 RB Wright clearly less than 100%, TE Taula out for the 2nd half, starting O-Linemen Zambrano and Bussone out for the game. I'm not sure about WR. As I mentioned in another thread Bailey, Carter and Khepra have been mysteriously quiet after coming into the season as potential starters. Former walk-on Daniel "Back Shoulder" Sobkowicz is now our most reliable receiver. You can label those excuses because everyone has injuries this time of year, but they are also facts. On top of all that there was a howling wind. When you factor all of that in, I am very disappointed that we didn't score in the second half but I'm not shocked, and I'm not surprised that we played conservatively on offense. If you object to the conservative offense, are you willing to give back the games it has helped us win?

We did what we've done all season. We played conservatively, especially late in the game. We did not turn the ball over. We relied on our defense to win the game. We forced YSU to march down the field against the wind with the Penguins needing a TD. We blitzed some because that's also what we do. A sack won the N. Iowa game for us. This time the opponent made the big play and we didn't. When you play teams with similar talent you're only going to win about 1/2 of them.

I thought the kid QB did a good job sliding. Better than Justin Fields I can tell you that. Injuries are going to happen. You can't baby him. You gotta win the game. And the time to be conservative was on YSU's last drive. You are up 4. Sit back in cover 4. Drop your LB's. Drop your Mike like it's Tampa 2 and take away the dang post. I know it's coaching hindsight. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

That alleged telecast was so bad my wife refused to watch and left the room. And she loves football.

Since Robinson? College football has changed since all these guys have been here. Spack has not evolved with the game. If he doesn't get Tre, those seasons are probably not even playoff appearances. Tre would have been better off professionally playing DB in the Big 10 than playing QB at ISU.

I'll write more after the Bear game is over (who knows how long it will take??). ;)

But one thing that bugged me about the way the game ended yesterday is, you know, you "game" the coin flip and possessions and so forth in order to get the wind in the 4th Q, and then, when you have the chance to take advantage of it . . . . . nada. Pass the ball, kick the long FG, something, anything. Drove me nuts up there yesterday. It's kind of a corollary to the "conservative" end of game offense - you take the wind not to use it for your own gain, but rather to make the other team play against it. Frustrating.

Or just run to the outside which is work every time he just wanted to wrap the middle and try to work out the clock if we got in the first town they would we would have won but no he decided to try to protect his offense not to make a mistake which cost us the game

Cole Mueller has followed Robinson as the next great Redbird RB. Cole had 3 carries for 22 yards at Wisconsin before going down to injury early in Game 1. It's true about Roberson being a professional DB but I was responding to a statement about Offensive players wanting to play for Coach Spack. Tre wanted to play offense and his talents were fully utilized as an outstanding QB under Spack/Beathard.
