Mid70s....a Redbird fan actually thought...being an independent ROCKS. Then even ranked we still had to compete for dance cards with DePaul and NotreDame…..

Then we moved into the MoValley….and I hated the move at the beginning....started to enjoy the Valley....I even now love the Valley more just because of football (glad that Creighton and WichitaState moved on)!

ISU should be sitting pretty....but $chools are the only cause for all the negativity centered around ISU being in a mid major conference.

The Lamb - Malaine - Cornley - Zwart - McKinney - Duncan - Stefanovic - Johnson era was unforgettable. We may never see that again in our lifetimes.
That was ISU’s best and most competitive and talented team since I have followed ISU hoops. So so much fun it was going and watching them play. So sad knowing the glory days of ISU hoops are gone forever barring an improvement in conference affiliation.
And that list leaves off Dwayne Tyus, in the class with Lamb and Raynard. DT was a good ball player.

We were so good then. Horton was the place to be. Donewald had buy in to his system. Great players and a great era. So proud of those teams.

Could not agree more ... though I enjoyed it at the time I had no idea then how lucky we were to have those reams. Truly awesome experience

Way to bring him into the convo as he was a very good player too.

Give me one strong tough guy like Lamb - Raynard - Cornley - Zwart and this current team would be a helluva lot better. They'ed put up with no crap from anyone, other team or they're own. Then give me a PG like McKinney. Please!

Pathetic that we have to reminisce about teams for 30+ years ago, but that’s what this program has done to us.

It’s always interesting to see the old video. Talking about the old crowds and it was noisy in Horton, a smaller venue. BUT as I recall though a MVC Championship game it actually wasn’t a sellout. I believe it was also the game where a scuffle broke out. Coach Richardson grabbed Lamb from behind and Rick shrugged him off like it was nothing. Ahhh those were the days. Went to Tampa for the NCAA game only to get my heart broken!

That was during the regular season. The Championship game was during Spring Break, not sure if it was a sellout or not

The Tulsa game had about 5k fans.

The Donewald at large teams would never get a bid today. Not because they were not worthy. Not since 2006.

Disagree ..”.the woe is me” for ISU athletics not being successful is not supported by the existence of some very successful mid major programs like Gonzaga..etc.

Those Donewald teams made the ncaa tourney via at large bids vs a conference tourney winner which is proof they were legit on a national basis.

I agree, those teams would have gotten an at-large now. To say they wouldn't is not based on any facts. Too many people just want to blame the NCAA without looking at numbers and results.

A. They beat top 100 teams in their non-conference and were willing to play good teams on the road.
B. The MVC was an elite basketball league during those years so they won top level games in the league.

In the 84 season the 7th place team in the MVC had an RPI of 110. Drake and West Texas A&M were the only teams worse at 165 and 166. 7 of the 9 teams in the league were in the top 110 of the RPI.

In 2017 when everyone says we were robbed, the 3rd place team in the MVC had an RPI of 147. The last place team in the MVC in 83, 84, and 85 would have been the 4th or 5th best RPI in the MVC in 2017.

Tulsa, Wichita St., and Illinois St were all ranked most of the year in 1982/83. Bradley was a very good team too. In the 1985 MVC tourney, we lost our 1st round game @ home to Ind. State and still went to the tournament. Also the tournament was 48 teams..

I was down in Tulsa for the ... 85? Regional. The one when we beat Southern Cal & lost a pretty close one to Tisdale/Grant Oklahoma. I was with Tyus having a beer after the Ok game, reminiscing about an ISU win over the Carr/Livingston/Sherrod/Dreiling team. I was rambling about an ISU guard driving the baseline and dunking over Carr when I realized I was talking to the guard who had done it. Duh.

God I hated Billy Tubbs.

Great memories. I still remember my first BU/ISU game. Versace got a double technical and the place erupted. We made all 4 free throws and then threw an alley-oop on the inbounds play to Lamb that rolled off the rim. Almost had 6 points in a second. Rushed the court after beating DePaul too

All the top 50, top 100 wins crap does not matter, Hasn't for over a decade. Not since 2006. In today's world of college basketball, Donewald's second and third NCAA teams would be NIT teams. That's why the NCAA bought the NIT, to placate the non P5's not getting at larges. Not saying at all that those Donewald teams don't deserve it.They certainly did. But that was when it was based on getting the best teams there. That's why we have had a couple of teams since 2006 get left out that would have gotten in during the Donewald era.. Sad but true.

Those second and third Donewald teams beat Alabama and USC, respectively, in the NCAA tournament.

I don't know how much has changed after 2006. It's not like the MVC was picking up 2 or 3 at-large bids on a regular basis before 06. They only got 2 at-large bids 3 times between 1979 and 2006.
