Liam McChesney, who figures to be a key rotational player for ISU, didn't dress because of a hip issue that Pedon calls day-to-day.

"Liam is going to be a real important piece to our puzzle. He has great talent and versatility," said Pedon of the 6-10 redshirt junior. "I want to make sure we're doing right by him. It allowed us to play some different combinations tonight. As a coach you want to learn as much as you can about your team early."

One other thing. The more I learn about Coach Pedon...the more I like him. Even if we don't win many games this year, I am way more than satisfied to have him at ISU.
Agree. It was entertaining…which has been missing for a long time. Here’s to much future fun!

It was a good showing. Burford has jets and Poindexter has got some muscular legs. Liked what Sarge said about Sandage not looking the part of an athlete.......isn't that the beauty of the kid - he's just a ball player and a tough kid. For the no shows, he's pure at shootin the rock. Heck from Hoopfest you could tell he's got a nice stroke.

We'll be challenged inside but like Pedon said on post game radio, we've got enough length inside to choose from so we got some resources. I felt both Andrews and Kotov filled their roles nicely - as blue collar bangers.

Knight hopefully has more to show. He seems to be a guy who can drive and get to the hoop but maybe a pull up J should be suggested vs. getting tangled up and not finishing. He'll b ok I'm sure. Got beat multiple times in first half on drives to the lane too - looked very similar to guys playing D on past teams.

Noticeable difference from past. We cover passing lanes pretty well. We don't seem to dribble the 3 point line and then jack - a huge upside. Not sure of turnover totals but they seemed acceptable and I believe Burford had only 2.

Overall, very pleased and I'm sure we'll address the Big issues as best we can.

Also - Kasubke appears to be a high IQ type on the floor. As stated before, he seems to b a nice all round guy who will give us quality minutes.

Fully agree...they seem limited on talent but played hard on defense. Definitely my biggest area of concern.

Looking at the box score, I was surprised Schmitt didn't play more (6 minutes) but I see he had 4 fouls, so maybe that was the deal?

Kasubke played quite a bit and was leading rebounder.

Petrakis appears to be more of an "outside" scorer, but I'm interested to see if he plays the 4 or 5 on D or is more a wing man.

Burford's got a nice line, 5 assists 4 steals and only 2 TO's!

Will be fun to see how the pieces fit together, and if Pedon can't get more out of Kotov especially, but also Schmitt and Andrews.

I see the schedule doesn't yet have any TV/streaming info up yet for the non-con games - anybody know what's up with that? Will they get something going for ESPN+/3?

Difficult to tell much against DIII exhibition, but it appears Birds have enough bodies and are willing and being asked to play aggressively D/O inside and out. They will need to improve help defense down low to deal w/MVC posts. Really happy to see guards looking and passes being made to interior especially the first half, seems to be an emphasis, appeared to be running through progression before firing the 3 unless they were wide open, square to basket👍. Guards also didn’t give up many open 3s by Wooster, challenged dribblers, fighting through screens vs switching+ creating mismatch, we’ll see how well they can against quicker guards in the future, but I‘m hoping they can continue to play that way. Players seemed willing to give up the ball, with expectation they’d get it back if they were open. Only thing I didn’t really Like was a post player a couple of times trailing the play, but stopping at the top of key calling for ball to be dropped back-they need to be headed toward the basket. Went a stretch in 2nd half looking a little tired with a lot of standing around and taking first shot which they won’t be able to do in Valley. As they say, that’s why you play exhibitions/non-con. Looking forward to opener.

My thoughts on the team was I was pretty impressed, Burford and Poindexter they set the the tone on the defensive end and they get after it. It was much better defense and effort then we saw the last few years.

-Guards: Burford, Poindexter and Sandage. The 3 guards can all shoot and play defense. I think the 3 will learn to play off of each other very well. They all can also each play the 1 or the 2 which also helps out.

- Forwards: Lewis, Knight and Kusubke again these guys can play multiple spots. Lewis will be quiet but will lead and I think Knight will find his shots and points within the offense as he gets comfortable. All these guys being able to play multiple spots really helps out.

- Bigs: I liked what I saw from Andrews and Kotov. I wasn't sure what to expect from them but they can provide minutes and seem to know the roll they are supposed to provide. Then you have Liam and Sissoko who might figure into this spot depending on how they decide to play. All in all Liam, Sissoko, Andrews, Kotov and Petrakis depending on matchups and other problems you might have 25 fouls between them on a given night. Use the bodies and bigs we have to our advantage.

The ESPN App has EIU and both NwSt games labeled as ESPN+. I am not seeing anything for WIU yet? I thought I saw somewhere that FloHoops is streaming the Cayman tourney.

And neither are lefties so they wouldn't have been recruited by Dan 😋 . I think we have a good core of guards. Need the bigs to start their offense In the paint every once in a while. Hearing we have a Krutwig coming next year so hopefully we can be more inside out next year
Sarge, care to mention Krutwig clone by name?

That was well put my man. Even against better competition if you can knock down open 3’s and stretch the floor it open up things for our bigs. On any given night one of the guards have the ability to get hot. I just don’t see all of our shooters having bad shooting games in the same game. It’s gonna take a committee of our bigs to make a difference down low. I was sitting close enough to hear one of the refs tell our coaching staff one of our bigs will foul out a lot this year. So we shall see how this all play out.

Had to be Schmitt. Picked up 2 quick fouls after entering the game and had 4 fouls in less than 6 min.

I mentioned on my twitter thread but this game and the first several of the year, are really going to be tryouts for the bigs. Andrews started but then only got a little less than 9 min.

Minutes for the bigs:
Schmitt: 5:58
Andrews: 8:57
AK: 12:06
Joe P: 12:34

None of them really "showed out" against competition that was smaller, but more physical. Based on coach's comments, its seems when Liam is back and 100% healthy, there may be a decent amount of small ball played, depending on match ups.

Going into the game, it was clear that this team has three true "guards" in DB, Mal, and Sandy. Sandy said in the postgame that his role is to back up DB when he needs a breather at the 1. I had previously though Poindexter would be the back up 1. We also saw that Knight and Luke can bring the ball up, when needed. Sen reminds me of a MiKyle McIntosh type of player. Once he learns his role and how he fits into what Coach P seems to be wanting to do, he'll be a mismatch. Too big for a traditional guard and too fast for a traditional forward to stick with him.

The team should have a pretty good idea of what Western is going to be throwing at them as their fourth leading scorer from a season ago is playing in Red & White. I was honestly surprised he was 4th on their team last year, scoring 13.4/game. Their top 5 from last year all had 10+ a game and then their 6th had 4.2.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Colton start against his former team and have MP come off the bench for this one.

Could be Schmidt because he had 4 fouls in 5 minutes but I would guess Kotov. He used his hands and arms quite often to maneuver around the post player he was guarding. Andrews had the better technique but the others have the better length. None are great leapers except Liam, but Andrews and Kotov were not afraid to mix it up and use their bodies .... something Schmidt and Petrakis could do better.

Look, I'm not going to get down on Schmitt, I think he showed some great promise last year against much tougher competition. He made over half his shots and recorded quite of few nice blocks. I get that he's a liability on defense, many bigs are against smaller competition. I like what I saw last year in LIVE games and hope he can build off that. Glad he's not a practice "All-Star" as my coach used to call it, and can show out in games that count.
