Winning? Okay, mission accomplished.

2012–13 Illinois State 18–15
2013–14 Illinois State 18–16
2014–15 Illinois State 22–13
2015–16 Illinois State 18–14
2016–17 Illinois State 28–7
2017–18 Illinois State 18–15
2018–19 Illinois State 17-16

Winning season every year.

When you put it this way 2016-17 looks like an outlier. In 6 of the 7 seasons Muller has lost at least 13 games. Only twice out of seven did he win 20. I will accredit him for playing a tougher schedule than Captain Janks' D2 schedule, but it doesn't look like Muller is making any kind of consistent progress against that harder schedule.

If we go 18-15 (or something similar) next year with no NCAA, can we all agree it’s time to move on?

2012–13 Illinois State 18–15 - 9-4 - nc sos 239
2013–14 Illinois State 18–16 -7-5 - nc sos 98
2014–15 Illinois State 22–13 -8-4 - nc sos 102
2015–16 Illinois State 18–14 - 6-7 - nc sos 71
2016–17 Illinois State 28–7 - 8-4 - nc sos 173
2017–18 Illinois State 18–15 - 6-6 - nc sos 22
2018–19 Illinois State 17-16 - 7-6 - nc sos 129

I added non conf and non conf sos for each year. Dan is 51-36 in non-conference games (did not include post-season because those aren't scheduled). That is a 58.6% non-conf winning percentage. 7 of those wins are against non-d1 teams. In D1 games he is 44-36 = 55%.

Average non-conf SOS (ken pom) is 119.

The best year they had was also the worst non-conf sos in his 7 years.

Top Non-Conf win each season:
2013 - Dayton - 115
2014- Dayton - 33
2015- Old Dominion - 41 - Would lose lose at ODU in NIT
2016 - Morehead State - 100
2017 - New Mexico - 87
2018 - South Carolina - 85
2019 - BYU - RPI 93

So it is kind of a mixed bag. Played better competition, but average results.

I am all for a tough non-conference schedule because they are usually more fun to watch. I also understand why we want a good SOS rating. To assume a tougher schedule is going to make your team better just isn't true, unless you win enough of those games.

Another thing I noticed looking at our NCAA team sheets during the Muller era. Here is the average RPI win for each season.

2013 - 172
2014 - 167
2015 - 171
2016 - 205
2017 - 190
2018 - 140
2019 - 180

So the average RPI ranking on a team we beat is 175 the last 7 years. So a lot of wins against so-so competition.

Also, every year except 2017, 2015, and 2013 (I made a mistake in the initial info our non conf sos was 239 in 2013) our conf sos was worse than our non conf sos.
