What if ISU joined the CUSA?

Just for kicks and giggles, I pulled up an article from the Internet archives. The Illinois Board of Regents had approved a 5% increase in tuition for the 1985-86 academic year that increased full-time tuition at NIU and ISU to $1050. Controlling for inflation only and not for other contributing factors, one might project current in-state tuition at ISU to be approximately $4200, not its reality of approximately $15,000.

The explosion in the cost of tuition to its current level is certainly not unique to ISU; it is nationwide and has several contributing factors. However, one has to wonder if third-party inspector generals' investigations at each college and university might expose just how much "fat" in terms of low-performing and redundant programs and depth and breadth of administrative layers could be trimmed. The results of such granular audits might reduce some costs, help in redirecting some resources to programs with more pressing needs, and shine a brighter light on the roles played by the other contributing factors. Just a thought.

That may be the cost for 1/2 a credit hour now... Keep in mind, most classes are 3 or 4 credit hours...
