This is kind of where I am on some of this - nickel and dime reductions. I spose there could be some travel costs for these outfits that starts to add up. But the real money to save is in the big programs, travel and salaries and recruiting, etc. I don't like it.Why? What does cutting those sports do? They still have a track program, I assume. That's the long distance part of their track team, that coach is probably on the staff for the track team. They still have tennis courts. That can't be that expensive to run.
I just don't see how they will save THAT much money cutting these. Cutting a program should be done only in the case where the athletic dept is going to go under without it. I doubt this moves their books much.
Men's Golf + Men's Cross Country more than likely equals Women's Tennis for scholarship totals. Way more nonrevenue full scholarships for Women's sports to that of Men's sports to make up for Football. Akron does not offer a Men's Tennis team. Akron's Women's Tennis had 9 players last year. Of those 9, 6 (67%) were foreign players. Is there a higher cost with the foreign players? I can easily see the Men's Golf + Men's Cross Country equaling 9.Those sports don't even get full scholarships most of the time, do they?
