Why? What does cutting those sports do? They still have a track program, I assume. That's the long distance part of their track team, that coach is probably on the staff for the track team. They still have tennis courts. That can't be that expensive to run.

I just don't see how they will save THAT much money cutting these. Cutting a program should be done only in the case where the athletic dept is going to go under without it. I doubt this moves their books much.

My guess is this is a good excuse to cut sports they wanted to cut before the virus. I doubt it saves that much.

I would think the scholarship money would be slid elsewhere. Then you have the insurance costs for the student. I'm going to guess athletes are slightly higher risk at getting injured, the big one being womens tennis, then they had to get rid of equal number of mens scholarships. A nickle is a nickle. But I'm going to think those sports never come back also and that's the big driver.

This is kind of where I am on some of this - nickel and dime reductions. I spose there could be some travel costs for these outfits that starts to add up. But the real money to save is in the big programs, travel and salaries and recruiting, etc. I don't like it.

Those sports don't even get full scholarships most of the time, do they?
Men's Golf + Men's Cross Country more than likely equals Women's Tennis for scholarship totals. Way more nonrevenue full scholarships for Women's sports to that of Men's sports to make up for Football. Akron does not offer a Men's Tennis team. Akron's Women's Tennis had 9 players last year. Of those 9, 6 (67%) were foreign players. Is there a higher cost with the foreign players? I can easily see the Men's Golf + Men's Cross Country equaling 9.

Just for FYI, my son plays tennis. A national level juniors player at 12u (He is 10).

I have to think some of the cuts are as much about the optics as the actual savings. Departments are being asked to cut back, so they have to show they're doing their "part". I'm keenly interested to see how ISU cuts 10-20% off the athletic budget.

Men's golf = 4.5
Men's Cross Country/Track combined = 12.6
Women's Tennis = 8 and is a head count sport
I would guess they're eliminating 3.5 Track./CC scholarships by dumping CC. That will save them 16 total rides. At say 20,000 per ride? $320,000???
Not to mention salaries, benefits, travel...............
Akron AD said they're cutting 4.4 million so there will be more including football rides. Football is a head count sport.

So it looks like Akron will cut from 19 to 16 varsity sports - the FBS minimum. ISU sponsors 17 sports (7 men's and 10 women's). I think that the non-FBS D-I requirement is 14 sports (6 men's and 8 women's). We're staring down the barrel of some pretty rough times for college athletics.

'The elimination of these sports, along with salary reductions for select coaches, staff position eliminations, scholarship and operating expenditure reductions will total approximately $4.4 million" the press release details.

Overall they are trying to cut 4.4mm in total for athletics budget. Obviously these cuts represent only a portion of the 4.4mm.

I am assuming you may see some fall out similar to MAC regarding championship tournaments.

At this point I just hope sports are allowed. Hopefully the serology tests ramp up and the small samples that show this has been around since mid December hold true. It would help with playing sports with fans. I need some Redbird football and basketball!
