I watched a bit of one of their games. The best thing I can say is he makes the game look so easy. This is a prime example.

I didn’t score 35 in my varsity career lol. I can’t fathom being that good. Keep it going young man.
It’s one thing to do it, but Ty makes it look so effortless. One report on a game basically said they were surprised when they looked down and he had 20+.

I don’t know the rest of the big names in the state this year but how awesome would it be if he won Mr. Basketball?

Ty Pence and his team is playing possibly one of the worst teams in the tournament to start but:

Austin will give a more in depth scout as he was watching in person. I missed part of the game, but what struck me most was how effortless it looked for Ty. He was easily the most talented on the floor and it wasn’t close. Best part is it looked that way too.

He’s gotta be averaging close to 30 a game, right? Also, I’ve seen 6’4 to 6’6. Can anyone confirm his height?

From 2 weeks ago or so:

Free from some of the external pressure with his college future secure, Pence is averaging 27.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals so far. He’s also making 60.6 percent of his shots from the field, 46.2 percent of his three-point attempts and 82.6 percent of his free throws.

Plus, he’s got a legit chance to become SJ-O’s all-time leading scorer this season.

Pence is already third in school history with 1,667 career points and needs just 73 points to pass former Illini and 1971 graduate Rick Schmidt (1,739 points). He’ll have to do a bit more work to surpass the 2,115 career points 2017 graduate and current Lindenwood guard Brandon Trimble established, but it’s within reach.

He’s 449 points shy of surpassing Trimble right now, and with at least 22 games left to go in the season — possibly more, depending how far the Spartans go in the postseason — he would need to average close to 20.5 points per game to become the all-time record-holder.

I’ll reserve full analysis for later this week, after I see him a few more times but man, he effortlessly did whatever he wanted today. Annawan had nothing for him. He scored 36 and was out most of the second half. Looking forward to seeing him tomorrow against EPG. EPG gave him fits last year and I think he still dropped 20.

Hoping to catch Certa tomorrow and the NCHS kids at some point during the tournament. Brother Rice has a kid we’re on as well. I’ll probably just start a thread for the holiday tournament tomorrow.

More guards, need more guards...more 3's
This is so unfounded. Have you looked at the composition of the ISU team versus how most NCAA teams (especially at the midmajor level) are built.

Most teams play with at least 3 guards ... some play with 4 guards At least 8 or 60% of scholarships would be allocated to that position on most teams if not more.

Here are all of the potential font line players for 2023 (current and eligible to return next year)
1. Walker
2. McChesney
3. Lewis
4. Schmidt
5. Kotov
6. Andrews
7. Petrakis

Sissoko at 6'7 and 215 is more of a tweener

Guards
1. Burford
2. Poindexter
3. Kasubke
4. Pence
5. Kinziger

We are light on guards this year and for next year in my opinion. You can see it when Luke was ill, Poindexter missed game with ankle injury, and the few times we had foul trouble at rhe guard position this year. We have used a walk on, Jayden Johnson, to help out at guard because we only have 5 true guards on scholarship.

Pence and Kinzinger are replacing Knight and Sandage. Walker takes the open schlarship we have in 2022.

While we currently have more scholarships awarded on our front line, we still need to strengthen this area overall. Perhaps that is your concern. I believe a couple of the current front line players will not be here next year (just my speculation without an ounce of actual insight) However, if we lose 2 players (not named Lewis or McChesney), I would expect to backfill with a guard and a front line player hopefully increasing depth in backcourt and talent in the front court.

I would not be opposed to letting Kinziger and Pence be 4 year starters. Let them take over the program similar to PLee (except I think they’re even better recruits than Lee). The potential is there and I’ve seen enough from both to believe we are very lucky to have them. Both also have a chance to win state titles this year…. stay tuned.

No two classes are the same of course but I think back to Stallings first full recruiting class with Jamar Smiley, Dan Muller, Rob Gibbons, Rico Hill, etc. Not to compare but think of John, Ty and Chase filling similar roles as Jamar, Dan and Rob with the understanding their styles of play and attributes will be different of course. Curious where another version of Rico might be.
