How does our list compare to rest of Valley? Looks like mostly definitive moves up (SMU/NIU) or down (DII) a level.

I’m surprised at some of the names leaving on the defensive side, given how solid they were last year, but I guess everyone has their reasons.

I also wonder if some dip their toes in the water, then decide to return. Portal can get crowded and there are only so many musical chairs. Would Spack take them back - a la Muller with Chatman?
Come in off the ledge Dmills ;)

Yes, that list shows a number of losses, but "real" contributors, well, Reid, Simon, Brown, Peyton. I'll give Jefferson his due, but he's going to DII and got moved out of his starting job. Edgar and Rutkiewicz had their days, but . . .

Look at the incoming, an FBS transfer to replace Edgar and Rutkiewicz at WR, and JC starting OL from a team that played for the national championship. FBS DB transfer to plug in for Iverson and Brown, and a QB with Big 10 starting experience.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Plus, possible some come back (Zeke Vandenburgh did last time).
Losses feel like they are starting to pile up. Let me know if I missed anyone.

Iverson Brown surprises me since his brother Dallas Brown just signed with the Birds in November and since Iverson started and really had a nice year. Maybe as dpdough and Madbird says he might be testing the waters to see what's out there at the Power5 to see if he might have a starting spot or something.

The transfer portal giveth and taketh away. The defense doesn't really worry me after the number of losses we had after the 2019/2020 season and the spring 2021 season. Spack knows his defense and will build it back up. Spack always has walk-ons like Franky West from Normal Community ready to step right in and play.

It is abundantly clear “Entering the Transfer Portal” is the “Trendy” thing to do in NCAA sports. Going to a school, taking a corny photoshoot/video, writing a 3 paragraph twitter picture about transferring… come on!

This trend will wear off. IMO it really comes across as wanting to do the “cool thing” rather than desiring to be competive and beat the other guy. You can’t just quit your job every year and expect to earn higher salaries. You can’t play football forever either.

How do scholarships work in the portal? Do u give it up when u enter, or when u sign elsewhere? What happens if they don't sign elsewhere?
When u have so many players in the portal, how do schools know how many open scholarships they have?

As I understand it, once you enter the portal, your scholarship goes back to the team. If you decided to return to the original school, it's up to the team what your scholarship looks like. To my knowledge, very few (if any) football players at this level are given full rides so there are partial scholarships and flexibility/creativity with how you divvy them up.

On the basketball side of things, its cut and dry. You have 13 scholarships available and I don't believe partials are a thing.

I don't recall seeing this article here, if so I apologize for posting it again if its there. Very interesting article on the number of transfers from MVFC teams. Doesn't really include much about destinations tho - so, it's kinda hard to speculate on who lost starters vs. reserves, or like in our case of Jefferson, someone might have left who moved down and maybe wasn't playing at FCS level. But still. We have a lot in the portal, but not as many as Missouri State. The article is a few weeks old tho, so maybe NDSU and SDSU have more.

Would love to see an article about incoming too, since I feel like ISU didn't pretty well so far in that regard.

Rumor is wright wants to come home and play for a smaller school to get more reps, just too many really good RB at Kansas state. I hope we would make room for him as I don't want to play against him.

Harvey must of played well enough at juco to get offers from Texas tech, Indiana and Central.

Safety Iverson Brown moving on -

It hurts to lose Brown but we saw some good things from Dillon Gearhart late in the season so I think we're still in good shape in the secondary.

Right now I've got Isbell and Gearhart penciled in at the Safeties and West and Price at the Corners. Newcomer Larry Tracy might have something to say about all that.

Still a ton of guys on the portal.

I wouldn't want to be a WR in the transfer portal. There are so many of them, we should be able to pick up a good one.
I said we needed to come out even or better in the transfer portal this recruiting season. We have a good chance to come out ahead.

I'm going to mention this one more time and then I'll try to give it a rest. There are roughly 50 uncommitted QB's in the transfer portal. A lot of those players didn't plan on coming to a school like Illinois State but some of them have been in the portal for months now. Even if they get an offer from a FBS school they are going to miss spring practice which means that school likely wants them as backup in the fall. If a portal QB still has hopes of starting in '22 he should consider a FCS program. Coach Spack mentioned that the staff continually watches the portal but when he mentioned positions of need, QB was not included. Offensive-minded programs like Missouri St. and SIU have been known to bring in transfers when they already had a good QB. They're Relentless. We need to be Relentless too so that means continuing to pursue QB's in the portal and elsewhere.

Thats a bummer. Really like Isbell and what he brought. Spack will have another guy step up, nature of the beast today.

This is brutal. Losing your best players every year will cause chronic mediocrity. NDSU and then everyone else in one big scrum. Doesn't help either when former coaches recruit players to where they go, SMU, NM State. You will also lose young talent, ie freshmen/sophs when you keep bringing in 24 year old grad students for one year. People say the portal giveth and taketh but its more taketh when you're FCS
