ISU needs to move up. No more 6-5 seasons. Make a bowl and all the cash it brings

Mark ... I think there's a little more to the Cost-Benefit Analysis in deciding to go D-I than maybe making 1 of the 42 Bowl Games every few years, if that. And some of those Bowls pay no more than an FBS buy game, some less.

p.s. gotta run, malls are opening in BloNo ;)

Yes, look up the payouts for the "lower level" bowls the MAC and AAC and Group of 5 schools go to. Only in the 6 figures, and of course that money doesn't go directly to the schools but to the conferences to divvy up based on their own formulas.

Bahama Bowl payout was $225,000, MAC vs. CUSA. How much would those schools that played make after sending the bucks to the conference and splitting it up? And so forth. Would hardly pay for the transportation.

Aren't schools obligated to purchase a minimum # of tickets to their bowl game?

Mad, from a purely selfish and self-centered perspective I could care less what ISU would make at the Bahama Bowl. I would be all in to travel to the Bahama Bowl before a trip to Fargo for a playoff game. Let's focus on the really important things, please! Wasting away in Margaritaville...

Absolutely. Mrs. MadBird and I discussed this when we watched the game - which as I recall was on a Tuesday afternoon or something and we agreed it would be so "tough" to have to go to one of the first and lowest profile bowl games in the Bahamas of all places. You'd think it would be the #1 bowl destination!

ISU offered 2 transfers this past week:

WR Fabian McCray - Northern Illinois; Graduated from Chicago Phillips. Has 32 career games played due to special teams action. 16 career receptions for 222 yards. Two years of eligibility remaining
OL Ron Carr - Duke (visited); claims to be OL/TE/DL on Twitter. 😂 Pretty sure he would slot in at OL - that is where he played at Duke. Saw action in 9 games over 3 years. Two years of eligibility remaining

Oh I forgot ISU made more money than that by not making the playoffs again this year. Needless to say that even if a bowl game that had 250,000 viewers, that's 50 times more people watching the game than a regular season ticket holders for Illinois State football games this year. Go rake your lawn thank you.

Glad to have another hand. Beyond the only 9 games played in three years, Duke bio lists him at "only" 257 lbs - pretty light by today's standards. May be better suited to TE or Edge. We'll see - maybe we're going with "quicks" on the OL now! ;)

According to the Duke stats, he wore #74 in 2020 and 2022, but #86 in 2021 when he played in 9 games. But I can't find any stats, offense or defense for any of the years. Maybe played TE in 21?

Crap, I had high hopes for Rashad, but the writing was on the wall, he had chances last fall but couldn't break in.
Same here. This isn't overly surprising. The top 4 RB's for '23 could remain the same - Cole Mueller, Wenkers Wright, Pha'leak Brown and Nigel White. There is also a group of youngsters looking to break through behind them. Injuries could tear through the field of candidates, but I doubt that Lampkin would want to rely on that happening for a chance to play.

It looks like there will be two waves of transfers every year. The first wave comes at the end of the season. This one is costly because it contains players that may be starters here, but they think they can play at a higher level, and they want to take their chances. Some will achieve that dream and some won't. The second wave comes in the spring/summer as players look at the roster and see who is returning in addition to transfers coming in. If they don't see the playing time they desire they could be gone.

I'm actually optimistic about this second wave. We could be getting some players dropping down from the FBS as they look around for better playing opportunities. If you're already not getting the playing time you want at the FBS level and you missed the chance to transfer in time for spring ball, then you really should consider an FCS program. It would be hard to transfer to another FBS program and compete for playing time in August with players that were there in the spring. It may not even be easy at the FCS level. It will be interesting to see if former Duke offensive lineman Ron Carr can come in and win a starting position competing against our returning linemen. It will also be interesting to see what other transfers commit to the Redbirds in the spring.

I'm officially transferring my "high hopes" to Sean Allen from Homewood-Flossmoor, who put up some gaudy numbers in HS, but was injured in 2021. and only saw the field in 4 games last fall. But, you know, he also had his chances one would think, unless he was still recovering from the injury. But there's lots of competition, that's for sure.

Allen, Logan, Robinson, Ficklin plus NIU transfer Blakemore - The Next Generation. Someone will emerge.

Cpac had it first, but adding here as well

Neither Carr nor Wroten played much at Duke, but Duke won 9 games last year and they scored 30 or more points 9 times. The Redbirds scored 30 or more points once. Duke also plays a tougher schedule, so it is possible that they had reserve O-Linemen that were as good or better than our starters. That premise will be put to the test in August.
