I'm reading about recruiting players as a starter or a #2 and that is not how most college coaches approach it. Most college coaches talk to recruits about COMPETING for a starting job. They want all players to do that. Coaches almost never tell someone they will or won't start. You earn or don't earn a job when you come in.
A recruit can look at the roster and the coach may help them by letting them know what they have coming back at a certain position. And the coach may add that he thinks you have what it takes to play right away but a quality coach isn't going to promise you anything except a chance to compete.
All that is true, a coach would never guarantee a player a starting role. But did anyone not think Annexstad was going to be the starter on day one? Do you think that the QB situation at ISU was not a factor in his decision to come to Normal? I cant say what was going on in Coach Spack's head of course, but I would bet he was thinking he found his starting QB when Annexstad signed on the dotted line, he just did not say it.

Besides that ... we are not coaches! We can speculate on those things!

Have a great holiday everyone!

A QB ranking in the top 5 at ISU is akin to the tallest Pygmy.
Do you really think that, other than Tre, we had a QB you felt confident could consistently drive their team down the field for a come from behind win?
uh .. Matt Brown for 4 years ?

IMO, Brown could have done more in a system designed around the QB. Whenever he went up against Garapolo, he always out-dueled him. Not entirely fair as we usually had the better defense .. but still, Brown could make all the throws, had a big arm, and was so confident in the pocket.

Tre was more explosive with his dual threat skills and deep ball. But Brown was the better passing QB for sure, especially in the short-mid pass game. They were probably equals with deep ball, though Tre seemed to do it more often. Tre certainly had a much better RB and more depth in WR/TE group. Brown had stud WR Tyrone Walker, but not as much as Tre after that. And Brown never had a much of a run game to rely on .. certainly not in 2012 playoffs, when Brown carried our offense in our 2 road games.

I didn't respond to that post because, well, because I didn't. But also there was this guy Kevin Glenn who wasn't a half bad QB in the late 90's and took ISU to the playoffs and set a bunch of records and then went on to play for 15+ years in Canada. And Luke Drone wasn't all that bad and I might pick him to take ISU to a game winning score.

TR .. not sure if you were refrring to my comments. If so, that isn't what I meant at all. if not, apologies for carrying on below

My point is simply that every position has a depth chart to start the season. You recruit to fill you roster and depth chart, without knowing who will work out, much less stay healthy. So my point about our #2 QBs is simply about us never having any depth at QB under Spack. 13 years is a long time to never have a #2 you can put into the game and not throw out half the play book.

As Ive said, I think it is combination of issues .. one being, we dont sucessfully recruit and develop HS QBs well. Kolbe's deterioration is my prime example of that - I think he could hve been a very good one for us ... a 3 year starter that finished in top 1/3rd or better in MVFC every year. Part of that is skill set (physical and mental), but the other part is culture and trust ... Spack really struggles with the latter IMO.

Chicken or egg debate certainly in play here ... meaning, maybe we don't have a #2 who is ready, or maybe we just don't develop and trust well enough. Either way, we have not had a good # 2 waiting in the wings in Spacks 13 years, sans Kolbe 2015-16, but then he fizzled ... due to Spack's handling IMO.

I was responding to multiple posts but if I were to single out one in particular it would be the cmark post earlier in this thread where he talked about ISU players supposedly being recruited as transfer backups. I don't believe those conversations took place. If a coach is offering a transfer a scholarship, then he is talking to him about playing. It doesn't matter who he already has. You can have two All-Americans at a position and they could both get injured. Coaches tell everybody to prepare like they're the starter. They want everyone working their ass off and they want everyone ready to go because you never know when you're going to be tapped on the shoulder and told - "Next Man Up."

Totally agree regarding Matt Brown. I always felt he didn't get the respect he deserved. Probably the second best ISU QB only surpassed by Tre.

Birds have added some depth at QB. Kaplan started against ISU and went 18/36 with 191 yards passing, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He was not their primary starter this year. Should have 3 years of eligibility.

I liked what I saw from Mason Kaplan vs ISU this year. On the season Mason was 46 of 77 for 586 yards, completing 59.7% of his passes for 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. You compare that to Jackson Waring when started at qb in 2021 71 of 130 for 879 yards, completing 54.6% of his passes for 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Mason looks like an ideal backup qb for a year or so to learn the system and grow.

UNI QB Matt Morrissey who played HS football for Montini Catholic has entered the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Franky West has entered the transfer portal. Might need a little help in the secondary from the portal. I know they have their eyes on a few players, some offers have gone out.

Ouch. None of the names of Redbird players entering the portal have surprised me until now. Didn't see that one coming.
I was surprised too, probably for some of the same reasons. He seemed to take a lot of pride in wearing the Redbird jersey. He should have two years of eligibility, though claims to only have one. Maybe because he only wants one more year of school, I don't know. I wish him the best, but I don't see him getting playing time at an FBS if that's the route he wants to try to go.

I was told he was one of the guys but I thought he would stay being a NCHS and hometown hero.

Plus dad was a Redbird. Surprises me too. But you know, there's gonna be several here in the next few days that are gonna surprise us, let's just hope the coaches are successful on the other side of the portal.

With the coaching changes starting to hit, lots of guys gonna be looking around.

sucks for him .. he did very well and was preseason all conference, but got injured.

good read below .. coaches has him tabbed as their top returning defender before he got injured.

Woods seems to eventually have issues with the programs he has been part of and I will leave it at that. He had a chance to move up to FBS and did well. I never saw the need for the comments he made when he left the ISU program.
