I can't confirm and I can't deny, I simply have no information. That is a pretty specific list though so where does this information come.from

That came from a friend of mine who is a college portal coordinator recruiter for a FBS school here in Florida. There where a couple from ISU players inquiries but they were looking to be starters and the only position that they offered would have been back up rolls. But he watches all the inquiry connections throughout the country.

So, Crazzy, are you saying the players are using the portal to contact schools even though they haven’t put their names in the portal yet?

So I guess your friend is saying Coach Spack lied on his Radio Show when he said they have 8 starters returning on Offense … which either your friend is talking about a lot of 3/4 kid or Players are lying to him. Lol you do realize they do exit meeting interviews etc at end of the season to see where kids minds and expectations are as well as informing some that there game/practice/study habits no longer inline with the team…..but this forum will know more by 12/5 or after this WIU game…

Thanks for the response.

I anticipate losing some players to the portal every year. Most programs do now a days. If you are second or third team behind a stud player you want to play and explore moving elsewhere. I get that. If you lose confidence from the coaching staff, rightfully or wrongfully, you probably want a fresh start somewhere else (Waring). I fully understand that. In the past if the coaching staff lost total confidence in you as a player you have few options. In this case it works for both the program and the player. When I read in the Pantagraph that Waring was being moved to wide receiver they may as well have just printed that the coaching staff lost all confidence in him as a QB.

Teams lose player through the portal and gain players. The Birds gain Annexstad and lose Waring. Nothing against Waring but in my opinion that is a good exchange for ISU. Other times you lose a good player you cant replace, such as Ridgeway. Welcome to the new age of college football. Being a coach was hard enough but it is harder now I think.

Remember players can get agents and the agents can make inquiries for them. Thank you Congress last year.

Well, he's no Ridgeway, but the portal did give us our starting NG this year, Noah Hickox from Minnesota. So there's that.

We lost Rutkiewicz to NIU (MAC), and got Jerome Buckner from Ohio U. (MAC) in the portal. I thought/hoped we'd get more production from Buckner, he has 8 receptions for 162 yards in 8 games. Rutkiewicz has 24 receptions for 405 yds and 6 TD's in 11 games for NIU, but a more modest 11 receptions for 155 yards in 10 games for ISU last year.

So yes, guys are going to transfer, no stain on the program for that. Individually, or if a whole crap load of guys leave, maybe something to worry about. Gotta wait awhile to see how that all plays out.

Not true. They can hire an agent for NIL purposes only, not for representation regarding college or going pro choices. If they want to “test the waters” for going pro, they can hire an agent for the period prior to the draft, but must notify the school they’re attending and terminate the agent contract if they choose to return to school.

Okay, I'll talk about Brown and Roberson (and Kolbe and even Brady Davis).

Spack became coach in 09. Matt Brown became starting QB in 09, and stayed for 4 years under Coach Spack. 09, 10, 11, 12. 2013 keys were turned over to former Illinois HS player of the year Blake Winkler - didn't go so good. Then came Tre Roberson, who came to play under Coach Spack, 2014 and 2015. Pretty good years. Then in 2016 HS recruit Jake Kolbe took over, had two pretty good years, good enough to now rank as the #5 career passing yardage QB in ISU history, #5 in passing completions in ISU history, #5 in career passing attempts, 2016 was the #5 passing attempts season record in ISU history and #3 pass completions record - in other words not so much of a mess. 2018 and 2019, Brady Davis took over, somewhat of a dropoff, but good enough to be among the top 5 in several passing records categories. 2020 and 2021, not so much again.

Four of the top 5 career leaders in pass efficiency in ISU history came under Spack - Brown, Roberson, Kolbe and Davis. Three of the top 5 career pass completion percentage record holders came under Spack. There's more, but I won't belabor the point.

So, a "mess for the most part" includes record setting seasons for 4 years of Brown, 2 years of Roberson, 2 years of Kolbe, and 2 years of Davis. That's 10 years out of 13 of Spack's years (and Annexstad, I guess the jury is out, but he's completed over 62% of his passes and has 200 yards per game in his 8 games in year 14).

So I'd say NOT a "mess for the most part", but instead an unexplained dropoff the last 3 years or so. And no argument about the depth, always been a problem, except when Kolbe backed up Roberson and Davis/Kolbe were together.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming . . . . .
A QB ranking in the top 5 at ISU is akin to the tallest Pygmy.
Do you really think that, other than Tre, we had a QB you felt confident could consistently drive their team down the field for a come from behind win?

According to what the law of the Congress passed last year a player can get a representative maybe not a agent to inquire about a player interest. The only real rule there is is a school cannot contact an athlete that is currently playing for another school during that season.

Again. Not true. Currently the issue is governed by the states. No federal laws have addressed representation (which means an agent regardless of what you call it). At least eight different bills have gone to committee, but none have reached either floor. There is a proposed bill that might do what you’re saying, but it hasn’t reached the floor for a vote and currently doesn’t have the support to pass.

Current regulations for representation for NIL:

LOL u will see him Redbird next year.........
The majority of the athletes are leaving was to play in the post season . Being on a team that doesn't play not to lose to win. They desire to play on a team that will make the postseason in the FCS or most likely FBS schools that even with a losing record you get to play in a bowl. As well as better name recognition for the draft. Once again North Dakota State, South Dakota state are not having these problems the kids want to stay there because they know they're going to win not play not to lose.

Wrong on this point, Crazzy.

“In order for an FBS team to officially become bowl-eligible, it needs at least six wins with a minimum winning percentage of .500. A total of 82 teams are needed to fill all 41 bowl games.”

1. How do you know this?
2. Why? He didn’t exactly kick well this year.
The kicker had an injury, hamstring I think, earlier in the year. I would guess he was never 100%. I can't see anyone strongly pursuing our kicker this season. He was adequate is the best word I can come up with. Again, probably because of injury.

I believe Wagner had a stress fracture or something of that nature. Came back sooner than predicted.
