I'm guessing we didn't kick bc our field goal kicking is not very good.

Not good.
As I said, we don't have a kicking game. Heck with state of the kicking game. Do we we have a kicking game?

Hard to discuss the "state of the kicking game" if you don't have a kicking game...

new kicker has decent leg and needs to work on accuracy. This is FCS .. not FBS, and not NFL ... for most part, good young kickers are going to be hard to find during transitions like this. Our last one started out just as raw and turned into pretty good FG kicker. I'm not even sure who was to blame for blocked kick ... could have been kicker, holder, and/or snapper ... or the interior OL.

Anybody get a good view on replay .. what went wrong ??

It was the guy on the outside, he came across the line and blocked it. Idk if kicker took too much time or the end on that block missed his assignment, none the less I'd be working on that this week.

thanks .. not good for outside rusher to block a kick that short ... I assumed it came from interior.

But you're right, it could be on blocker, kicker, or even snapper and holder ... chemistry and confidence among all 3 may not be there yet. Every split second counts .. said Captain Obvious.

But I do like the legs on our punter and kicker .. just need to work on things like placement/accuracy/timing, etc.

Blocking was a problem for a good part of the game. Almost made sense the Birds lose due to a missed block. The D played pretty well I thought for being on the field as long as they were but how many times did a defensive player run right past the ball carrier. Seemed to me to be a bunch of times. MoState also had pretty good success after first contact. Overall...not a good game for ISU but even so they still had a chance to pull it out at the end. This was the first game since StX that I had the chance to watch Davis play...underwhelmed would be a major understatement. He may have been great against EIU and CSU but I thought he was mediocre at the very, very best in the second half and he absolutely STUNK in the first. Hopefully just a one game thing.

I thought our defense also came out flat too .. first 5 drives play count: 7, 3, 9, 16, 8 plays .. so they weren't ready to make stops in Q1. They settled down after that in final 6 of 8 drives, getting 4 punts, 2 picks where they had 3 plays or less for 6 of those final 8 drives. But the other 2 drives both went 10 plays for 75+ yards and TDs.

ISU offense drive chart - total yards per drive

- 1st half drives: 13, 0, 8, 8, 25, 19
- 2nd half drives:
---- Q3 drives: 4, 51 (TD), 19, -13
---- Q4 drives: 50, 67, 43, 64

So up until the last 4 drives, our longest drive was 51 yards, then 25 yards.

We came out flat on both sides of ball. That is probably on coaches as much as players ... entire team was not ready for this game. Give MoST lot of credit .. they are probably bettter than we thought, and they came ready to play after bye week gave them extra week to prepare.

We're still a good team .. but we have work to do.

4th, that's a good take. Defense had a LT if missed tackles as well. My question fie you is what did you think of Spack's coaching? I thought he made some questionable decisions yesterday that cost us. Going for it on 4th n goal when your o-line didn't get a push all day and the timeout to just punt!

i was 50/50 on decision to go for TD on 4th down .. so not going to 2nd guess that decision. We SHOULD have been able to convert in that situation .. we had them on their heels all Q4. But I get argument for either call in that situation.

I'm more bothered at how Spack sometimes gets over confident in interviews and talks publicly about how well prepared team was ... and then was so wrong. It's as if he assumed there was nothing MoST could throw at us .. I was confident too, but I'm a fan on the outside looking in. But as a coach, I would not be so glowing going into a potential trap game like this. I would be the coach who knows anything can happen on game day .. and constantly remind my players of that.

I still like this team to keep getting better .. in hindsight, this game may prove to be silver lining of season ... a wake up reminder call ... show up to play every week !!!

If there is a fault of Spack - it is the kicking game. He does not like the kicking game and it shows.

I did not have a problem whatsoever going on fourth down - I do have a problem with how we approached it. First, there was NO ONE over the center - Davis needs to tap the center - go on first sound and plow straight ahead - no one else will be moving because it is strictly between the QB and Center - catch the defense flat-footed. Second, running wide on short yardage situations when you have a tight formation can be problematic. I am much more in favor of spread formations and run straight ahead - fewer defensive players at the point of attack. Or have the flow - line and running backs going one way, while the QB rolls out the opposite for a run or pass to the TE.
