Well, this isn't a surprise. A new division for teams who can afford to go pro.

This is why my theory has always been wait for the G5 to come down to our level because it's going to happen sooner than later, especially with Baker at the helm of the NCAA.

I can see the split at the FBS level as the disparity of resources is beyond ridiculous for some that are trying to compete. also an alternative fbs level appears to be needed as some cracks are starting to develop within the highest levels of p5 as some conference mates (FSU, OSU, U of M..etc) are starting to question why they should be equally splitting the conference media rights with lesser conference members ( Georgia Tech, Northwestern/Purdue/indiana/MN/Illinois).

In the end it is hard for me to see why the remaining upper echelon fbs have nots (the G5's and maybe even some remaining p5s) would drop down to fcs financial model given proven lack of revenue/exposure opportunities. Would their fandom's not want more and expect more than fcs football? I suspect the remaining fbs universities (of which there may be some remaining good brands) are going to go after however/whatever revenue they can vs just giving up the revenue they already receive.

So let them pay income taxes on everything like one of us !!!

But, their injuries, as employees, will have to covered under workers compensation laws in each state, which is basically for life for each specific injury. So picture how many injuries a football player accumulates in 4+ years ... more than 1 or 2. But if some wrecks his back or gets concussions ... Work Comp coverage is for life of each claim.

Which further means, the colleges who do so, will have to buy this coverage .. not cheap for football players, usually an excluded class of business with most sports. So the go to alternative markets to get coverage $$$$$$.

Though I'm sure when that gets realized, they'll try to wiggle out of that liability. But that is what it means to employ someone. You pay premiums to cover your Employees workplace injuries ... lost wages and all medical/rehab for life.

Seems to me to be a last ditch effort by NCAA to maibtain control and get a piece of the money pie. There could also be lots of issues to like

1. workers compensation
2. Title IX and equal pay issues
3. Splitting the subdivisions may have negative impact on things like NCAA tournament
4. Taxes
5. Self regulation
6. Athletes moving between subdivisions

I can't say I am surprised but obviously disappointed where this is heading.
