It hurt when I decided to stop going to Redbird women's basketball games. It hurt even more when the Redbird annual games with the ILLINI stopped. East and central IL women's basketball took such a downturn that I still wonder what the real reason both the ILLINI and the REDBIRDS suffered so much at the same time.
But I knew it was time to start paying close attention to Kristen Gillespie. Gawd….Coach Gillespie GLISTENS. I thought I could only love dark haired Redbird coaches leading the Redbird women's team (Pingeton)...but I have a hankering for a tall blonde coach now!
Today's game in Champaign was exceptional. The Redbirds did practically everything right. The Birds played at the old Pingeton level of excitement. Every shot that was good for the Redbirds had some type of flair. It has been a long time since I saw such incredible basketball played by the women's team. Wallen deserves all the accolades but TeTe Maggett was the floor leader and sparked most of the success down the floor. If TeTe was not around then Talbot was swishing around...or Juliunn Redmond.
The ILLINI just could not get their mojo going. The Illini have an equally incredible team (vast improvement over the last few years, as well) and I could easily see these two team meet up again in the NIT playing at RA in front of 4000+ at the end of the season. I just have that feeling.
AND this was the first visit to DaFARM since their remodel. Walking into the Assembly Hall....I still get that mecca feel. BUT I do not like the dark dark colors of the interior. The lighting was fun...but I feel that the RA still is more superior than the big barn....where 75% of the ads were farm related.
Watching the Redbirds score 74 over the Illini's 58 points....this game was also my return to quarters. I do have one question...so the number of fouls that are recorded for FT shots....are the fouls counted per half or quarter?
