Tailgating Tips?

Hello, all.

New to Blo-No and excited to embrace the ISU football team.

Really looking forward to this weekend and my family’s first chance to gate some tails.

Any tips or tricks you all can share? Where do most people tailgate? Any of the “tailgating” lots on the athletics website where it’s not as easy? Do bathrooms abound? Can you set up a canopy in any lot or are those restricted to the tent zone? Anything else I should know?

I searched the forum and went through a bunch of old posts but couldn’t find anything comprehensive.

Thanks in advance.

Go you Redbirds.

Hey, thair, Chi-bird.

Oh yah sure, sorry to disappoint you, but no, we are not from up North. We looked at houses on the North side near Ironwood, dontchaknow, but we ended up more on the East side of town.

OK. Well in that case, welcome to Normal. :D (Even if you were from up north posturing as a Redbird, I'd say that).....you see, Bison fans are probably the best tailgaters in FCS and are known to infiltrate other team's ticket allotment and parking lots. God bless, 'em. I think it's great.

Thankfully I have been using the internet for quite a while, so I both understand and respect your paranoia.

While I am not an interloper, I am not sure what the proper Redbird shibboleth is that I can say to convince you of my authenticity. Some non-googleable tidbits with hopefully a plausible amount of detail: my U6 son just got her PCSL photos from TSS photography in the mail today. My toddler daughter goes to Little Jewels and eats Avantis gondolas for lunch there once a month. While Redbird Arena’s renovations are almost complete (a few loge boxes need to be finished) inside, I noticed the Southwest loading dock was still roped off as of last weekend.

I have lurked here for a while, and I must say that for a board of people who generally seem in favor welcoming diehard fans you’d think it would be a tad easier to be welcomed as a new fan in the community. I look forward to the time in the future when I can similarly shakedown other new folks.

As for the Bison smell, I think I can explain: In my misspent youth, I spent more than a few nights engaged in activities that the 10,000 intervening showers may not have washed off.

Share your tailgating tips or don’t, I will be there on Saturday in my vehicle purchased from Brad Barker Honda just before O’Brien bought them out. I will try to figure something out.

Go Bi-, I mean, um, Go you Redbirds!

Amusing and actually just a wee bit entertaining! But I'm still not buying. Except for the stank you spoke of.

There are donor lots and there are several public lots. The public lots are over by Tri-Towers and the Baseball field off of Adelaide. If there are others, I do not know - Parking services would be able to help you out. Just typical tailgating - grills, coolers - no glass bottles. We have a tent, sometimes two - a generator to plug in crock pots, roasters, and a TV.

We usually bring 9 cases of beer, 6 gallons of punch, and a gallon of Peach Cobbler Moonshine for shots - after singing the Fight Song. I rule is Shut-Down 30 minutes prior to kick-off.

Interloper ?? Shibboleth ?? We don't use words like that around these parts .... and you're post reads like a bad scene from Hogans Hero's .... so save it for Colonel Clink and Sgt Shultz .. aint nobody falling for it here.

Thank you, BIrdswin, for the helpful information. I hope you are not persecuted for your kindness to a wrongfully accused alien.

I will continue to try to prove myself to the rest of you. Please keep in mind that I am new to the area, so my lexicon may not have adjusted to Central Illinois quite yet. I trust that it will do so over time, so please be patient. (As an aside, I only know the word shibboleth because of an episode of The West Wing, but it seemed too apt for this thread not to use it.) I am unfortunately just a bit young to fully understand the Hogan's Heroes reference, but I am German on my dad's side of the family, if that helps.

Is there a process for authenticating new fans here without me having to submit proof of residency?

While I write this, I am wearing a redbird t-shirt that I purchased at Hy-Vee when they set up a display of discount redbird stuff in the back area that you access to the right of the seafood display. To this day, my son thinks we weren't allowed back there and therefore must have stolen the shirts. I noticed while walking my dog today that the ducks have finally returned to the ponds in Tipton and Hawthorn. The Nextdoor App here is primarily people concerned over coyote sightings and possible Metronet outages (although the current top post on my feed is a person from McGraw Park looking for bicycle repair suggestions). Do you really think a NDSU fan could muster these tidbits? If they were that clever, wouldn't they have figured out a way to live in an inhabitable part of the country?

Cross my heart and hope to die, I am just a man with a growing love of the Redbirds in his heart and some genuine questions about tailgating here. I very unwittingly set off your collective BS[on] alarms. Go you Redbirds.

I don't think you're a Bison. I think you're JSNblahblahblah1 (and all the personalities that come with)...or his cousin Eddie from Kansas.

But besides all that I'm still giggling at the 'ole Redbird Birdswin and his 9 cases of beer (that's 216 cans of beer) 6 gallons of punch (768oz or 96 cups of punch) and a gallon of Peach Cobbler Moonshine for shots (that's 85 shot glasses) - after singing the Fight Song. And that's just for himself!

Well thank the Good Lord you're singing the fight song before the game, cause I'm not sure what it would sound like after the game. Stay thirsty my friends.

There's no real process but it's a little like tailgating itself. You just show up and claim a space. There isn't a magic moment but after awhile people get used to you being here and you're one of us. You can be known as the big word guy. Shibboleth? You sent me to google on that one but you're right it describes the situation perfectly.

For someone who is new to Bloomington Normal he sure knows a lot of odd history of the area. That part doesn't jive.

exactly !!!

Maybe my Hogans Heros' quip went over (i.e. under) a few heads. But they used to prep their fellow prisoners before missions outside their prison camp to act like they were from Germany by citing certain local trivia.
