Since I did not see the game, was it a lack of pass rush or a secondary issue that helped Siu’s passing attack?

I like that we're back to rushing the punter with the intent of blocking the kick. For a long time we didn't do that.

The turnaround? Partly the defense got tired, but mostly it was just SIU relying on Baker to do his thing. Nic Baker forces you to play defense at a very high level and that's hard to sustain for 4 quarters.

Today we just ran out of mojo ... whether it was energy, confidence, luck, SIU adjustments ... all of the above, we had them on the ropes, and SIU being a very good team, stayed close, took the momentum. Then the Wilhoit pic at mid field gave us a chance to take momentum back, but we were 3 and out. SIU came back and drove for another TD. At that point, they regained confidence/energy, and we lost it - it was over. All of sudden, DL wasn't plugging holes and their receivers were getting open .. several really big plays broke us.

But we showed we have the horses - just may not yet have everything and everyone capable of firing on all cylinders for 4 qtrs. But we showed we have the roster to compete .. just may have more ups and downs than usual ... MVFC is going to be very strong this year.

Today was a great start for Redbirds ... we're closer to ready than I was guessing. Still may be a stretch to say 5-6, but we'll have our moments here and there. As young as this roster is .. I'm looking forward to seeing these guys develop in 2021, and then seriously competing in 2022.

I didn't like the attempt to go for it on 4th down @ the SIU 5. Take the 3 pts and make it a 20-7 game. It was all ugly dogs after that failed attempt.

SIU made the game 17 - 7 and ISU responded with a nice drive. It was 4th and 1 at th SIU 6 and Spack went for it. I thought I was the right decision at the time but didn't like the play. If we convert the first down and score a touchdown, we have SIU on the ropes with the 3rd quarter winding down. That didn't happen though and the momentum shifted. SIU pretty much controlled the game after that point.

13-24 166 yards… Jefferson has this game you’re calling for a QB change. Waring had this game, you’re saying that’s QB1 material… it’s interesting.
It's not QB1 material at all. We technically may not have QB1 material on this roster. Play whoever wins. Give me QB4!

Liked going on 4th down. Was Bones in the game on that play?Apparently, he was in and out of the lineup with cramps.

Brandon Simon's replacement, Damien Jackson looked great today. 7 tackles, a QBH, and a blocked punt

A couple of things. No question the Birds surprised a lot of people for almost 3 quarters and I agree, that is showing improvement. Next, the 4th and 1 - that was the turning point of the game - no question about it. When you are big underdog - you cannot wakeup the favorite with a huge play - take the FG, especially when you are ahead by 10 points. Next, if you are going to go for it - why in the heck do we pack it in with a tight formation?? Spread it out for land's sake, no deep handoff, and with the Defense spread a little more - 1 yd should not be a problem as long you go forward somewhere between the guards.

For basically his second game - Waring is showing much, much more potential - and scoring points.

I thought Waring played well overall. First-ever college start on a team still developing on offense. I was actually encouraged for the future and it is a good thing to have two QBs with game experience. When Brady Davis went down a few years ago Jefferson and the rest of the QBs had almost zero game time. Poor development by the coaching staff because there were games they could have gotten the subs playing time and they didn't. The defense surprised me, very pleasantly I will add. For three quarters they played very well but the offense also was moving the ball and scoring. The offense stopped moving the ball and SIU went on a four-touchdown run.
I will not criticize the 4 and 1 call. That is one of those calls that if it goes right everyone praises the guts of the coach making the call. If it goes wrong the coaching staff are idiots. What I did not like about it was the deep handoff on a 4 and 1. Waring is a big guy (220 lbs) and just snuck for a TD earlier in the game. Why hand off 3-4 yards deep in your backfield? I don't recall if Bones was in for the 4&1 or not and maybe that was a factor but QB sneak it! To me, the game came down to three plays. The 4&1 the Birds did not get, the 3rd down run by Waring where he came up just a yard short of 1st down, and the third-down pass to Kacper that was thrown too high and he had to adjust and again the Birds did not pick up a desperately needed 1st down. If the offense converts on any of those drives and gets points I think they could have slowed down SIU's onslaught. As it went the defense was right back on the field on their heels and the TD explosion for SIU was on. For three quarters they played much better than I expected so although very disappointed in the 4th quarter performance a young team with a Freshman QB and something truly to build on. I saw some positives in this game.

Jackson really got after it and Shanon Reid had a monster - near perfect game. There was one play where Reid had Nic Baker in his grasp but Baker ducked free and threw a completion. It was that kind of day.

I also want to give props to WR Austin Nagel. We have bigger receivers and we have faster receivers but Nagel just seems to make plays. He's the best we have.

Its call OC IN experience ! um unsure if anyone remembers but there were time where Drew Himmelman was put in the backfield to block/run. Why not put Tim McCloyn to run behind a lineman or TM / Lineman/muller ! When it was short yard for SIU look who they brought into the game there heavy artillery was in the backfield blocking !

It's a wildly unpredictable season. Looked pretty decent yesterday for much of the game. Lots of good comments on this thread. Something to build on.

For a splash of cold water tho, in Minnesota yesterday, first year DI program St. Thomas, with a roster full of DIII recruits and one DI non-scholly class, blanked Butler 36-0 in their first Pioneer League game. Butler had 17 first downs, only 95 yards rushing, and 141 yards passing. Against ISU, Butler had 18 first downs, 125 yards rushing and 168 yards passing. I know a few stats and comparisons are hard to judge. But . . .

Still got some work to do.

Shannon Reid had 15 tackles, 9 were solo .... that doesn't happen very often.
