This fall I've seen a 4 person crew do a varsity football game and a 2 person crew do varsity football soccer. You can kinda get by with 4 in football but they're going to miss stuff. The mechanics of 2 in soccer are terrible. Especially if you've got an old timer. Virginia, I can tell you my biggest headaches were with girls' soccer parents. They didn't know a damn thing about soccer but they sure thought they did!
Amen to that Timmy!

Since I did baseball, I know how that is as an umpire best. The worst thing that has ever happened to baseball is the strike zone box on the screen. First off, it's rarely the right size. There are many examples of the same MLB game being televised by the two teams at the same time on the same pitch. One shows it as a strike and the other a ball.

But that gave all the fans at home the ammo they needed to lose their minds. Now the players/managers go back to the clubhouse in MLB or dugout and watch the reply on their tablet and start yelling all over again.

Some day I'd like for someone that stops the game to argue to then come out and say "You know what, I was wrong, the umpire got the call right and I am an idiot for doing that." Won't happen, but it'd be my best day.

I don't like it at all. Sorry SIU, but I think I'd rather talk about this than the dang game. Here is a summary of the history of MLB strike zone. Strike Zone | Glossary | MLB.com
What's most interesting to me is the current basement of the strike zone - which is a point just BELOW the kneecaps. The strike zone today, for the most part, is incredibly squeezed and especially with batters right on top of the plate. Rizzo is one of the great human beings in the game, but I'm pitching to his tits every single time until he backs off the damn plate.

I watched the StL farewell game on Sunday. Even as a Cardinal fan, it was very clear that the home plate umpire was giving Wainwright every benefit of the doubt. Almost laughably so. But it was a meaningless (relatively) game for Pittsburgh and the occasion kind of called for it, as ridiculous as it sounds. The Pirates knew it and didn't complain one bit...on what were some BAD strike calls.

I miss that human element. Certain umpires were outside guys, certain were inside, some were high, some were low, some had a big strike zone, some had a tight one (some blew a call at 1st base in the 9th inning of the 6th game of the World Series in which one of the teams had not blown a lead going into into 9th inning all year) (shoot did I say that out loud?)...but for the most part, you know going in what you were getting.

Wow I took this sideways. How did I get here? What's my name? I've fallen and I can't get up!

So I didn't watch the game .. had another conflicting commitment. So can't say I "saw" it differently than others saw it.

But statistically, this game looked very even .. in fact 1st half vs 2nd half were near mirror images of each other statistically. We shut them down 2nd half competely, and piled about 230 yards or so ... nearly identical to SIU dominating us the 1st half, and same overall on many key stats. And we had the ball 1st and 10 at their 16 yd line with a little over 1 minute on clock, and got to the 12, sitting 2nd and 6 I think. A TD just about guarantees we win the game. But we failed on the last set of downs.

Bottom line, as bad we played 1st half, SIU played 2nd half .. we just fell short by a set of downs. So I'm not real sure how good SIU is yet, but they beat a tough UND by 2 touchdowns the week before, and Northwestern a week before that. PLus they'd been averaging 32 ppg and we gave up just 19, shutting them down in 2nd half.

Loss is a Loss, but was it worse than that watching it .. aside from the slow start which always sucks.

I think just looking at the stats isn't a good way to gauge the game. We were pretty lifeless on offense until we cranked up the tempo. It exposed an SIU weakness and allowed us to "pile on 230 yards or so". Without the tempo change we likely would have remained lifeless offensively. SIU is good at stopping the run on standard huddle based run plays. They struggled once we put the pedal down and mixed it up on them. They got on their heels.

The defense fed off what the offense was doing in the second half and took it to SIU. Pure Synergy.

As for the ending - we got straight up jobbed on 3rd down on what was a clear PI in the endzone. If the correct call was made, we would have won the game. We get that fresh set of downs and we were going to the house. No doubt in my mind. Yes, we shouldn't have played ourselves into the position to need that call to get it done, but a penalty is still a penalty regardless of how much time is left on the clock.

Not helping their case for moving up to the so called big time:)
Are you referring to the Sun Belt? By the end of Week 8 they have a very strong likelihood of having two former FCS programs in the Top 25. And it's not App State or Marshall.
