Well South Dakota State leads the nation in attendance so apparently they don't think they have anything to worry about because no one's at the game it must be raking there yard like Illinois State fans do

I think the time may have ran out if not for the holding penalty...

Seems like we have no chance to score with the offense on the field. Maybe Zeke will get a pick six or fumble return. He’s doing everything else.

So is Jack W physically unable to play. Not that you are going to win, but he showed promise last year with the pass. Pass coverage is not allowing downfield or middle of the field throws. Defense got absolutely no help today!

Wright hurt again, tanner not playing, Zack not playing and why is Rittenhoise still in? Jack has played already and knows how to run this pathetic offense. Last week Coach Spack killed there confidence in the fourth by not letting them get a first down three times. No wonder they look beaten down. So press ask him about those points please.

Did not see WR-Carr back in game after the kick return. No depth with the injury bugs. Even after watching Rittenhouse pass the ball on saw on decent throw. Some of the short pass have no zip and speed rotation. One thing for sure ISU is going to have to Buck up on the OL 2023 to keep Annexstad healthy to make any kind of run in 2023.

Run in 2023? That’s funny.

I did not watch the game today, we had a family event. I can't say I am surprised at the outcome but I did not expect quite the drubbing they took. I will watch the replay later this week but I looked up the box score on Goredbirds.com and when I saw the numbers for total offense, ISU - 100 yards and SDSU 431 yards it was pretty evident this was a one-sided affair. Rittenhouse was 9-20 for 55 yards and an interception. He gained 38 yards on the ground - our leading rusher! I guess he played the entire game. Sounds like Zeke had a great game in a losing cause.
Hard to believe a couple of weeks ago we were talking on this board about playoffs. My honest opinion is after the way they lost last week against YSU and then a good beat down against SDSU this ISU team and coaching staff are not a playoff-caliber team.
One game to go. Western is winless. The Birds will probably beat them. Yawn....

Those thinking ”playoffs” a couple of weeks ago lost all credibility.
Any slim hopes we had of the playoffs went into the crapper when Mueller went down against UW. Honestly, even with Mueller, it was mostly pie in the sky.
Spack will be here until his contract runs out, not because they think he can still win, but mostly because this as still a basketball school (as remarkably hard to believe as that is), but also because ISU has shown zero interest in the importance of developing any kind of sports excellence (in sports that matter, that is).

The first half was interesting. I knew we wouldn't be able to run on them even with our running QB. We just missed on some passes. The defense played better than the score showed. We kept giving the ball back to SDSU and they ran a lot more plays. I like McCoy filling in at LB'er and Bowens is a better corner than he is given credit for.
I've been calling on the Redbirds to rush the punter and we got it done yesterday. You have to take some chances, especially against the top teams.

I can't say I agree with this. A win against YSU (a game they should have won and I firmly believe the coaching staff gave away) and a decent performance against SDSU followed by a win against WIU and the team could have made an argument for the playoffs. Without a win over SDSU, I still don't think that playoff scenario would have played out anyway but it was a possibility.

I had a feeling that Spack teams in the recent past just faded as the season wore on. It seemed that they would get off to a decent start and excitement would build only to be crushed with a terrible end-of-season performance. I went back to the 2015 season and looked at the last four games of each season from then until today. The results, to me, are pretty eye-opening:

2015
Last four games: 3-1 (Overall record 10-3)
2016
Last four games: 3-1 (Overall record 6-6)
2017
Last four games: 1-3 (Overall record 6-5)
2018
Last four games: 1-3 (Overall record 6-5)
2019
Last four games: 2-2 (Overall record 10-5)
2020*
Only four games: 1-3
2021
Last four games: 1-3 (Overall record 4-7)
2022
Last four games: Currently 0-3 and the very best the Redbirds can do is 1-3 once again. (Overall record will be 6-5 or 5-6)

Out of the last eight seasons, the Redbirds have finished the last four games at 1-3 four times and likely five times after next weekend. They finished 2-2 only once and only two winning records in the last four games of the season in eight years and those were in 2015 & 2016. Some of this may be injuries (Brady/Annexstad/Mueller) but that just means the team has no depth. Depth falls on the coaching staff. It is pretty clear that since 2016, Spack-coached teams have collapsed at the season's end.

Yes, they made a nice playoff run (2-1) in 2019 but honestly, that was solid defense and JR taking the team on his shoulders and that team had a very solid O-Line. In 2015 they were 1-1 in the playoffs. In 2016 they were 0-1 in the playoffs. In 2017, 2018, and 2021 (and now 2022) the Redbirds did not make the playoffs. 2020 was the Covid fiasco and a withdrawal from playing.

So in the last eight years, the Redbirds are 12-19 (probably soon to be 13-19) in the last four games of the season with six of those 12 wins coming in 2015 & 2016. They have made six playoff appearances in those eight years and are 3-3. If you toss out 2015 & 2016 the totals drop to 6-17 in the last four games of the season from 2017 to the present day. That is a consistently pathetic performance to finish the season.

Sorry for the exceedingly long post but this to me is pretty clear. Spack teams can not finish a season any longer. Not just one team but consistently. I pulled the numbers off of Goredbirds.com.

Snap out of it Virginia, you're gonna get the "boo birds" all riled up!! ;)

In this vein tho, was thinking about next week's game vs. WIU, and thinking about all the cold November games I've sat through with a thousand or so close friends, hoping to go 6-5 instead of 5-6, vs. WIU or UNI or YSU, usually when they're 8-2 or 7-3 and fighting for the playoffs. Only difference this year is Leathernecks are turkeys, and the east side bleachers are gone! :D

That is interesting.
We all know ISU (just like the Bears) has historically been a defensive program. I wonder if the lack of offense over the years, which causes the defense to be on the field much longer than they should be, is the reason for these late season slides.
Those guys must be getting worn out much faster than a program with even an average offense.

Yeah, they kind of got my hopes up there for a while. Agree totally on McCoy, he's come along pretty well. Not so much for me with Bowens - BUT I had a kind of wake up call/reminder looking over the roster during the game yesterday, that our DB's have a healthy membership of Sophomores. Lamont, Tracy, Dabney are veterans, but West, Gearhart, Bowens, Jackson all sophs. So, all in all, room for improvement but they've got a chance to get there.

Still waiting for some more WR's to step up. What happened to TreShawn Watson - started game 1 but hasn't played since, must have gotten injured? I had high hopes for FR David Connors from Twin Cities, but looks like he's taking a RS. Help is needed.

Birds have been killed all season by short crossing patterns particularly with the TE, and by QB runs usually up the middle, like a QB draw or late run out of a drop back. I'm convinced there's a flaw there the other teams have figgered out and Birds haven't corrected/adjusted.

All of that said, the Jackhares have a nice team this year, I'm still PO'd that QB Illinois native Gronowski got away, and glad to see someone other than Bisons on top.
Yeah, some disagree but I still think the WR corps needs help. Maybe coming out of a redshirt, portal, or HS recruitment but the Birds need some upgrades at WR. O-line is the next area they need help. QB is good, at least the first team. Rittenhouse looked okay against YSU (still have not watched the SDSU game) and where is Waring? He started a bunch of games last season out of need and was not great but was not terrible. My guess would be Waring will look at the portal. When you are number 2 and get passed by a younger guy in this day and age the trend is to not fight for a position but to move on to supposed greener pastures.

SDSU's big challenge now will be if they meet NDSU in the playoffs. SDSU has done very well against NDSU regular season but lost to them in the playoffs. Not sour grapes on my part at all but I am for anybody but NDSU to win it all. I admire what NDSU has done but damn... let's see someone new win the FCS! If only for the sake of variety!

Watson has not played this year. Think he may have dress out 1x this year. Everyone is talking WR step up and RB . No one is considering how many games we have had all starting OL play together this year may 2 games. Even if Muller was healthy and Wright without a consistent OL maybe our Rushing #’s per game go up 35 per game .. SDSU OL was make shift line guys playing out of position…

Yeah, Watson's listed in the stats as starting Game 1, but not playing again all year. No stats in game 1 either.
