How come on the official ISU Football roster some players are listed as Redshirt Soph vs just Soph?

Example would be Cole Anderson vs MALACHI BROADNAX. Both are listed on 2016 REDBIRD FOOTBALL SIGNING DAY and on personal info listed as 2016 redshirt and played a bit in 2017. Why listed different?

Also is there an official list of who is taking up all 63 Scholarships?

Thanks

Don't know about the first one. To me they're both redshirt Soph's.
Anyone who didn't walk on is getting a piece of the 63 scholie's. So the vast majority of the roster.

Total money for scholarships=cost of 63 scholarships. This can be divided among up to 85 players. Given 99 players on our roster, we have at least 14 not receiving football scholarships of any amount.

I don't know how our staff does it. Our players come from very different financial situations. Some could readily make up any gaps in scholarship support, while others might need every possible dollar. I'm guessing that close to 85 players are getting significant scholarships, but I don't know that. But some pretty significant contributors have been publicly awarded scholarships in recent years...which is a big thing to them and the team.

Spack went to new schollie model in recent years. Generally offer 75% schollies to most athletes, which allows him to spread 63 full schollies to most of the 85 rostered players. I would assume there are some studs or some players with greater financial need that might get more. BUt I also assume they try to get whatever aid they can, and then use that to offset schollie %. He sells this to players and their parents as our way of building the roster. Whether he does that for most or half his roster, no one knows ... but that is general idea as I understand it. For all I know he tried this, and it didn't quite work out and reverted back .. but that was and maybe still is the plan.

This sounds like something that would fit the job description for a Director of Football Operations. It's the bulk of what Alicia Mays does, right?

Ya Seems like we redshirt everyone too. Who is a true Jr or Senior on this team? Just Robinson?

I would guess so ... but it's a lot like dealing with salary cap space .. so I'm sure Spack leans on someone to keep track of schollie $$ coming into and out of every semester.

This thread reminds me of a question I have had for some time...when they split a football scholarship (I will use cost of attendance numbers) do they split it by percentages regardless of in-state vs out-of-state tuition/cost of attendance? Meaning, for example, two players split a scholly 50/50 yet one player is in-state attendance ($29,300 for 2018 cost of attendance) as he went to high school in Illinois and another is out of state ($39,400 for 2018 cost of attendance) as he went to high school in another state so that one players $$s benefit is $14,650 yet another player's $$s benefit is $19,700. It seems like the out of state player receives more scholly benefit however the out of state player still pays much more out of pocket too...19,700 vs $14,650. Seems like ISU would need to give a higher scholarship percentage to get out of state players to attend ISU vs what they would need to give in state players?? Just wondering how the out of state vs in state cost differential is managed/considered by the athletic department/university.

I know Brock talked about one of his incoming freshman this year who was given a football scholarship. But the kid then earned an academic one so he gave his football one back to the program. So that's one way to make those 63 stretch to more players.

You can mix athletic money and academic money if the athlete meets certain academic criteria. It's a high academic standard but I would think a lot of guys meet it coming in. So yeah that's a good way of stretching out the dollars.

Players can play in any four games including post season and still redshirt. Not just the first four games.

I think that rule is a good one. Late in the year if we're really thumping somebody why not get some of those 'kids' in a game and see what they can do? It's great that they won't lose a year because of it. Maybe Buffalomeat will get in one this year.
