Do you peeps understand now how hard it will be to keep a good player here for more than a year or two?? The numbers vary depending on source, but 200K puts you somewhere in the 3-6(%)percentile.

Plus a Porsche. Student-athlete? He. Hee. Heee.

God bless ya Tone.
Count on this. At some point...the system will implode. Even if a major fracture happens between Major U and Minor U and they go that route. It will still implode.

My thing is, this has already been happening for years, I can think of several instances where the worst kept secret was a player on Kentucky, Kansas, or UNC getting money and a nice car under the table from boosters. Hell they made a movie about it. The only things the NIL rule has changed is that teams no longer have to hide it, and players can actively seek it without getting in trouble. The transfer rules lately have had a bigger impact.

I don't see the system imploding, but I do think long term we will likely see a big shift in the recruiting landscape. I think long term the bigger P5 schools will gravitate more towards recruiting the transfer portal, and we may start seeing things like more 4* recruits landing at mid-majors than we had before.

Mid majors may get the 4* recruits, but they won't keep them for more than a year, maybe two. It will become a minor league system for the P5. Fun.

Maybe instead of an annual, offseason transfer portal, the NCAA can make transfers available at the end of each month during the basketball season, so that if some mid major player is blowing up and having a great year, a P5 school can just take him.

I know coaches have things in their contracts that say if they leave there has to be home and home series (or something like that). How about if there is something that says if a player leaves a school and gets an NIL agreement, some of that money comes back to the school he left.

Their recruitment off campus will largely depend on how good the Mid-Major gets with that 4* recruit, if that mid-major can get NIL deals, if the coach leaves, etc.. If we can put together some NIL deals, we'll have a better shot a keeping the really good players, assuming our team doesn't suck or Pedon doesn't leave for one reason or another.

Welcome to Illinois State University Redbirds Basketball. The official one-and-done school. You have the option of either going to the NBA after one year or transferring to Kentucky and receiving $200k and a brand new Corvette!

Well, since P5s are now negotiating with MMs to develop players for them for 1 or 2 years, then if a MM gets a good reputation for development then they could become a pipeline for higher caliber players knowing they would have them for 1 or 2 years with the idea of each year getting a refreshment of higher caliber players. Of course this makes me cringe but if nothing changes then schools will have to play the hand their dealt.

I sure hope policy and governance is established for NIL and transferring that could bring some balance and equity but I am not holding my breath. I can’t blame anyone for going where the NIL money is being offered - it is now the official era of sanctioned free agency. Boras, is that you getting involved? I think the legal pay for play makes transparent the handwriting on the wall for MMs that we all see.

What if a P5 could just buy a player - like a non-conference game buy. Yeah you can have him. But it'll cost you 500K.

Sign them as a Freshman to a NIL contract with a non-compete (most non-compete are good up to a year) and money needs to be returned on prorated basis. Similar to NFL signing bonus.

Even better: install an MLB-style options system, where guys can be called up/sent down I think five times. Also have an in-season transfer deadline where players can bail on their current team until, say New Years Day when conference play starts. Gotta fortify those P5 rosters for the stretch run!

Well, the good news is that we really weren't competitive before these new rules came into place, so we won't get hurt as much as some other teams...
