As far as my understanding, that is correct. The school really isn't involved at all in the day-to-day specifics of NIL. The players essentially operate independently with guidance from someone in compliance on what is allowed. Players are not allowed to use the school's logo with NIL. For example, if Reeves was a spokes person for Rivian, he could not wear ISU gear in the commercial. He could wear a generic red track suit or whatever but not team apparel. When Fleming released his clothing line, he used pictures of him playing basketball in what was clearly a Redbird uniform but he had to edit out the name on the front and logo on the shorts.

NIL rules are pretty loose from what I can tell. If any alumni or local business owners with deep pockets want to see the program have the turnaround that Iowa State did, they should open their check books. Get Rivian to endorse the top 6 or 7 guys that Pedon wants to bring in at 50k/year....
When I said we I don't mean ISU. I mean the ISU program outside of the school. Like the stupid Illini Guardians group that are a bunch of rich boosters who give recruits and players NIL money for whatever. They are trying to get Kofi enough money to stay at Illinois rather than go to the NBA.

Makes me question if I even want to watch college basketball any more.

I mean it's just open paying of students at this point. Illini Guardians

“The world of NIL has opened dynamic and exciting opportunities for student athletes to market their individual name, image, likeness and voice.

This has created an unprecedented need for a trusted liaison group to raise NIL funds and match opportunities for students and the Illini Nation with integrity and innovation that will keep our athletic programs among the country’s elite. Illini Guardians is exactly such a group.”

Gotta think these are teams that reached out. 0.0% chance he ends up at WKU. He'll probably go to Az State.:sneaky:

He has a lot of better offers than that. Probably depends on how he thinks he'll fit in.

Neither DJ or Tone would have the quality offers they are/have received if they didn’t come to ISU and been given quantity minutes their freshman/sophomore years. They were able to adjust early and grow and make mistakes and develop. No way they would have gotten that chance at P5. Their development would most likely take much longer as there is no replication for game time minutes. The quantity invested transformed into quality developed within that spectrum. DM was generally good at spotting talent where others couldn’t or at least seeing a higher ceiling than others could perceive. Fayne and Lynch fall into the same category. Phil did remain a Redbird and finished with a great career. Hopefully RP can develop and retain talent in the quest for program building.

ISU and schools like us are simply feeder programs for P5 if we ever get good players. Either that or we get kids that are better suited for D6 ball. Xfer rules and social media have ruined college sports and catered to the snowflakes who want instant gratification. I want my school to be good year in and year out but I lost hope for that years ago.

For the better part of the last 10 years all I’ve wished for is avoiding complete and total embarrassment.
I hope the new coach does well and if he does he will be gone faster than a fart in a windstorm.

This sucks but it’s reality.

Its been this way for a long time. That is the main reason I supported the guy from D3. He won everything in sight. Did not appear to be chasing paychecks. He may have stayed and put the program on his back,

As long as there is a minuscule chance, I’m going for Coach Pedon to bring in a couple of Belleville guys to get this party started:
E.J.Liddell
Javon Pickett
Antonio Reeves than pulls his name from Transfer Portal
Sy returns
Fleming developes into the top PG in MVC
🤷‍♂️

P6 coaches shouldn't even waste their time with HS recruits anymore. Go get the transfers and mold the pieces together.

That is the general rule and reality. Mid-major players and coaches will leave for perceived greener pastures if they have success. But rules have exceptions and that's what you strive for now. Somebody somewhere will recruit some underrated players and the nucleus of that team will stick around long enough to be a disrupter in the NCAA tournament. It might be harder than ever to put together a Cinderella team but there will still be a few glass slippers out there.

NCAA men’s basketball has had and always will have its Oakland A’s payroll and it’s New York Yankee’s payroll, and by the way so does life
