How many players have entered the portal so far? I can't keep track and sorry if this was already mentioned!

With all of this transfer portal stuff....FCS is going to be dead in a few years, and it won’t be long before 2/3 of the schools in FBS suffer a similar fate. The player movement is going to ruin college football.

I tend to agree. They have removed almost all restrictions. It may well develop into a free for all and programs will suffer most likely.

Maybe this should be on its own thread but as I watch some of the best Redbirds leave for other opportunities I have to wonder how this will impact the fan base. It has been discussed on this forum frequently the difficulty they have getting fans into the stands consistently. If the best players continue to leave results on the field may be impacted, depending upon how badly other teams lose key players. Myself, I do tune in and watch some key players. It adds to the enjoyment. I would tune in just to watch JR play. I really enjoyed watching Ridgeway play. I always thought as I watched him destroy O-lines that if Madden was commenting on an ISU game he would zero in on Ridgeway and definitely be an All-Madden candidate. I really enjoyed watching Romeo McKnight run through offenses and sack the opposing QBs. Players come and go in college of course but this is going to be a major game-changer I think. Nothing can be done about it and you can't blame players for taking a great opportunity. Ridgeway is going to play for Arkansas on a big stage next year. Great for him but it will lessen the enjoyment of watching the Birds for me in the fall. If the Athletic Department is interested at all in promoting ISU Football and filling the stands I think their job is getting harder and harder.

I think, I hope, we have to look at the short run and long run with this transfer business.

In the short run, programs will be hurt, especially at the "not top level" level. FCS, Group of 5, P-5 schools that aren't top tier. It's new, kids are going to explore their options, try this new transfer thing, etc. But it has to shake out - it's musical chairs, there are only so many slots available. For every Ridgeway going to Arkansas, there's a kid at Arkansas who just got "recruited over". There's a Noah Hickox from Minnesota transferring to ISU, there's a Micah Jones transferring to ISU from Notre Dame. Shannon Reid to ISU from Tennessee. Etc. Etc.

In the long run, I'm thinking the "newness" rubs off the transfer portal. Sure kids will continue to take advantage, it will be there for them, if their coach leaves or if they fall out of favor. But not as many. Maybe. It will surely diminish the game for some of us - the concept of building a team is probably gonna suffer. To some degree shorter stays by lots of guys. Instead of getting some guy's "best" when he's a junior or senior, you'll get his "pretty good" when he's a soph or junior and then might leave. Guys will join for one or two seasons instead of signing up for 4. But anyway, I think it'll settle, we'll get more used to it, it won't be as disruptive. Fewer guys will transfer.

And I hope, down the road a couple years or so, NCAA will come to its senses and straighten this out some. I know, I know, just hoping! ;)

Shannon Reid is a good example of us benefitting. I bet though if he had played his first two years here then Tennessee would be stealing him from us now. There's plenty of 3 and 4 star recruits that just didn't crack a power school's lineup and need a chance to play. Going forward would it be a better strategy to go out and find a Tre type transfer or to still recruit freshman knowing if they turn into gold they will only be stolen away. Seems like either way we'll only have most of the really good players a few years.

Interesting, Isiah Williams moving to WR. Was hoping he would consider transferring to the Birds. Think that the recent Rutgers QB transfer would had him #3 on depth chart.

I disagree, I actually see more G5 conferences looking to move to FCS. The power five are making it harder for them to compete and costs are going up not down. Most universities do not have boosters willing to dish out big money.

You know who isn't a fan of the transfer portal? The NFL. Imagine if a player like James Robinson or David Johnson just decided they were going to transfer to Ohio St or Iowa to play as 3rd down back or something. They would have never had enough tape to even consider putting them on a roster. This is going to make major programs second and third teams heavily comprised of players that would be all conference and standouts in FCS but only come in for clean up duty or for injury in the Big 10 or SEC.

I kinda feel those power schools have so much unused talent that it might benefit some of their bench players to move on to an FCS school. Personally I rather be a big fish in a small pond. But then it might be a lot of fun as a back up player at Notre Dame.

I don't know that there are ANY all conference or standouts in the MVFC that would come in for clean up duty or for injury in the B10 or SEC. They seem to transfer into important roles on those teams.

With the FCS seriously thinking about moving the season to the spring, that will cause many programs to move out of the FCS to keep fall football, it would make sense believe that would include North Dakota State South Dakota State and Illinois state

I have seen a few articles where the idea of FCS moving to spring permanently was discussed but all sportswriters speculation. I have seen or heard nothing about a move like that being seriously discussed.

FCS will never move to spring ... just plain dumb if anyone actually put that in print. Fan interest in football has always been associated with fall. And unless everyone gets an indoor practice facility, FCS spring football is a really really dumb idea.

And no, the transfer portal will not be the end of FCS. There is still the same # of starting spots and reps available in D-I, all levels. The door swings both ways. It will only mean a few less 4 year players at both FCS schools and FBS schools. I do think the 1 free transfer rule is more good than bad ... more importantly, it is fair to the student athlete ... but again, just 1.

In the end, while I have always liked restrictions on the ability of players to transfer willy nilly, I do love the idea of 1 free transfer, no restrictions. After that, it should be appropriately restrictive similar to current rules.

Agree with all of it. What I never understood was the difference in transfer rules among the sports - if a wrestler or tennis player can transfer w/o sitting out, so should a football or basketball player. Or turn it the other way, but all student athletes should play by the same rules.

Similar - the draft rules. Hockey or baseball players don't have to "declare" for the draft - they can get drafted out of HS and if they don't like the situation, they can go on to college and play away. Let basketball and football do the same. Cripes, the hockey kids can play a year or two of junior hockey and then go on to complete 4 years in college. Get consistent. And don't "force" kids into a one and done or in FB 3 and done at a college when they really don't wanna be there.
