Grimes leaving, you're going to see some other receivers in particular Rogers who is 6 ft 3 step up and make some great strides Illinois State needs to start utilizing the bigger receivers

I liked Grimes and thought he had a good career ahead of him. I feel bad for Hatfield. I don't think he ever got the opportunity to really compete at QB. I recall Spack making a comment at one time, and I am paraphrasing here, that he recruits QBs first for their athletic ability before anything else. The inference I got was he recruits QBs looking for where he can move them to another position. I think Hatfield fell into that situation. There are probably more players yet to enter the portal. Congrats to Woods if the SMU comment is true. I guessed he would depart for an FBS program. Best of luck to him. Baltz probably needs a change of venue. He quickly rose to #2 QB as a true Freshman and then plummeted it seems after that fiasco of a game at YSU. He never seemed to have recovered. Either his confidence took a beating or the coaching staff mismanaged and did a poor evaluation of his skills and readiness. Maybe both.

This has kind of been Spack's thing, right? Bringing guys in and figuring out an alternative place for them to play. How many times has he turn a potentially good RB or TE into a Linebacker or DL? Quarterbacks like Hatfield who move to the defensive side of the ball or Cam Meredith moving from QB to WR, James O moving from WR to TE. Sometimes these moves benefit the player, other times they don't.

What kind of school do you think Grimes will end up at? Better or worse? I thought he had a lot of talent; this year was kinda of a waste, and I guess so was last year with his being injured.

Spack told Hatfield right up front that QB wouldn't be the ideal position for him. But he insisted on trying to be one. Brock said, okay, you come here and I'll let you throw one pass then I'm converting you to RB (or DB). So at least he got to throw more than one pass in practice.

I think Grimes can end up at a lower FBS program in the MAC or Sun Belt. He's a talented kid for sure

I am interested in where Hatfield ends up. Will he be a QB at some other program? Will he remain a DB? Whether he wanted to or not he made the position change but he did not get any decent playing time at any position. Whatever position he ends up playing I am guessing he is moving to get playing time somewhere. I wish him the best of luck where ever he ends up.

History says Spack QB's who transfer out don't make it big where they end up. Some don't stay at QB. That's saying something, not exactly sure what. Tristan Smith, Malachi Broadnax, Conor Joyce, Hasan Muhammed-Rogers.

I think it may say that QB, arguably the most important position on a football team, is Coach Spack's Achilles heel.

I wonder if he never fully recovered from that injury he had. Not sure how fast he was before that. I just remember he had a pretty good game at NIU (except for the fumbled punt).

As for Malachi Broadnax, I thought he was looking pretty good in the secondary (as a backup). Seemed like he was a big hitter...but then pfffft...dismissed from the team.....

It appears Charles Woods has de-committed from SMU. I thought that would have been a good fit for him and was excited to see what he could do. He took "DB @ SMU" out of twitter bio and recently posted offers from Kansas, West Virginia, and Minnesota.

FCS football is officially the AAA minor affiliate of the FBS and will replace JUCO as the best source of quick talent. We in turn will need to take FBS cast offs who were over-evaluated as FBSers coming out. FCS is a little brother conference and the new transfer rules will further brand it that way. Time to jump to the MAC to at least say we're really a D1 school.

Ridgeway wont be in the Portal Long ! This is why you utilize even some of your 2's/3's to get that experience even when you up 21 pts to develop deep ! This one HURTS !

What a bummer. DT will be a disaster for us this fall. For some reason I never thought he'd leave. You think he'll be playing at a Big 10 school?

I know he will not be in the Portal more than 3/5 days. Bummer... At 1st thought Spack was crazy for stopping season. After thought losing Ridgeway maybe we should have played 2 more games with the freshmen lineman he said was not ready. At least that would have given them some game experience at college level instead of just practice. Spack was saying he did not want anymore injuries etc which was great for stoping season. At same time these boys basically have be in classes/lifting since season stop not counting since last June/July. I am hearing they got to report back early June of the summer. I hope mentally/physically they don't burnout. I can imagine the playoff teams those kids are going to burnout especially back to back contact seasons. I know a few schools who drop out are not reporting till July. Body clock and mental stability wise 2 months those will be the teams who will most likely do better. Covid has jack up the season. Wish now ISU would have played in fall or said forget the spring season.

A few things.
I think the big guy can go to just about any school that runs an odd front. A good nose is hard to find.
I think you may see Spack quietly go back to an even front next year.
I think this transfer stuff is trashing college athletics at our level.
